p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Backup advice for 5DII?

Looking for a backup/2nd camera for my 5DII kit. Mostly shooting on location and studio portrait work.

Considering a 5D (which I've owned before the 5DII) and the 7D. Like the consistency in setup and battery/accessories between the 7D and the 5DII, but not sure about the crop factor.

I'd use this not just as a backup, but along with the 5DII in order to have multiple lens ready.

Any thoughts on which (or other) to choose? Have even considered another 5DII, but would like to keep the price a bit lower.

thanks in advance.

I suspect a 1DsMKII could serve you well for your purposes. These now seem to be in the $2000 range, which is a bit lower than the 5DII.

Since you are looking for a dual set-up too, I would suggest adding another 5D2. The 5D2 is falling in price fast (at least over here - 1829,00 euros). Maybe wait for January 2010...

I'd suggest the 7D.

It'll accept your current lenses, of course, but you also could add a less-expensive-than-L-but-still-excellent lens like the EF-S 17-55 IS. The 1.6 crop factor would be easy to adjust to after a short time, and you gain the advantage of having a weather- and dust-resistant package at considerably less cost than a 1D series camera, for those times when you need it.

You'd get a lot of flexibility with llittle downside as to image quality with such a package.

7D gives you a differnt approach to. that way its not just a back up but a seperate body that can have another lens mounted on for a different view
eg
5d2 with a 16-35
7D with a 24-70
gives you no overlap in FOV

+ you can use the same batteries (shame its not the same grip though)

A second 5DMK2 would be the most obvious choice (controls the same, same "look", etc). If that does not work than a 5D would be a good second choice. Most of the controls are the same (* button instead of AF-on) and view through the finder is the same. Just as important your post processing settings would only change a small amount (I use less sharpening on the 5DMK2).

I 1DIII would be a great complementary body to your 5DII.

I have all 3 mentioned above.. as a 'back up' 5D makes sense.
I use mk II & 7D extensively. to me 7D isn't back up to 5DMKII but rather different tool for different job.
of course the IQ on 5DII is better than 7D but eveything else is better with 7D.
they are made for different purpose..
