After a good long run of over 17 years shooting Nikon, yesterday I switched to Canon. Just thought I would share an image I captured this morning while up around the Mount Hood Area...

Thanks! 5D MK 2, ISO 50, F/16, .3 seconds

because nikon always lags behind, Canon comes out with something first and then nikon....I wanted the larger file sizes because most of my work is done on low ISOs so the low noise on the D700 did not matter to me....I was willing to take the file size over low ISO although Canon seems to be doing good in that area too.....and to be honest, I was ready for a change....Nikon has been good...don't get me wrong but the images I am seeing out of the new 5D are just amazing...and today while out shooting for the first time with the new can I realized how great it was.....all the errors I made were my fault and not Canon's....

hmmm. Your reasons make perfect sense - you need more pixels/resolution and don't really care about noise. And if Canon makes you happy, then .. good for you. Welcome aboard.

well I recently had a client need an 8' x 10' print.....for a backdrop for a show.....and it was pushing the limits of my Nikon D300 to get an image that size....I will be much closer with this cam and I am planning on getting the Sigma 50 1.4 to do multiple shot panos for really large prints!!!

Nice image, and welcome to Canon!

FYI, should you need to, you can shoot sRAW1 on the Canon and get high ISO noise performance that is as good the D700. The 10Mp file size is pretty close to the Nikon too...

I am a fan of the Sigma 50/1.4 but it does not particularly excel at stopped down
shooting at distant focus. For that application you would be well served by the
Canon 50/1.4 or by any of a number of inexpensive alternative manual focus lenses.
The Contax Carl Zeiss 50/1.7 comes to mind.

Or, even better, the Zeiss 50mm ZE f:1.4.

Great capture, thanks for sharing. I like the subtle colours. And I think the movement of the water adds mood to this beautiful winterpicture

For your reasoning to switch from the other side to here, well this is always personal and some of us switched the other way around and are perfectly happy as well. BTW I am glad you motivated your decision with the filesize over ISO noise treatment. It's so true: "there is no substitute for megapixels".

Anyway, welcome in the world of EOSfun It's the only thing that Nikons can't give

Welcome to the Canon board! Sorry that the Nikon didn't work out for you as they're excellent cameras as well. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses though so it's good that the 5DII is working out for you. Great shot, btw!

Hi Daren,

Nice shot!

I just made the same switch as you from the Nikon D300 to the 5D2. I'm luke warm on the switch so far to be honest. You have to love the resolution though! Congrats on the new kit.

Chris
