and so you should... on the saving for this one
Who knows? I'm driving through SLO on my way up to the Bay area in January. I may stop by their showroom and take a look at the tripod. I think I better leave the credit cards locked up in the car!

Paul

I replaced with two new Gitzos in the past two years, so I'm not looking for tripods at the moment. We'll follow your experiences.

well that most likely going to be a very boring exercise. i don't expect much out of it other then its unwavering support for my gear. i'm just waiting on the leveling stage/platform to rear it pricey head.
on the tripod folded size:
folded up it is approx 1.5" to 2" longer then a 35xx/55xx gitzo. diameter or the folded bulk though is substantially more compact even with leg pads. the way the spider and leg attachments are designed reduce the footprint of the whole tripod. the whole package with a BH55 or just about any other equilevent head still fits in a Kinesis XS tripod bag
on spikes:
i think here gitzo my have the edge for now. though still in developement the RRS stomp in spikes are a remove after use type product. where gitzos long spikes also are they lack the stomp in flange. they do have the set of smaller spikes which can remain on the tripod and be covered by the rubber tripod tips. that is nice to have. also by having the small spikes as a semi permanent part of your gitzo it raises the total available height by almost an inch. the short spikes helps to stabilize on rugs. of course the possible wood floor under it may have an issue though they aren't sharp.
rock claws:
interesting idea
leveling platform:
still in developement can't wait for that.
center column:
not an option needed at this time for me
Shame its on the short side... I would have got one other wise... I have the gitzo 3541XLS which has a big advantage over the rrs for me
It's interesting the folding length is nearly the same with these 2 but the gitzo gets around 500mm higher.
on the point of payment for services rendered. well it seems i'm not at that level of "professional" status where gear is thrust upon me to be seen with. that in itself is a multi edged ethics issue i am actually gratified i don't have to deal with. so for RRS i paid out approx $948 and change delivered.
love? no. i work in a field that is totally reliant on electronic, electromechanical and just plain mechanical products and workmanship in the highest form. i have an appreciation for a level of quality that only a few here get.
evidently i have the $ to purchase any tripod i want and previous to the RRS model i owned a feisol 3371 which share much of the same basic design concepts. and there was a reason for that.
the only 2 gitzo models i have/had did not include the systematic design. and there was a reason for that too.
Back to the "hook". The RSS site describes a "dual format hook" and shows a picture of what appears to be a full size 'biner on the hook. What is the "dual format" ?
