Hey DJ, I see you were shooting 300mm on FF from the bench correct?
Your goalie shot #8, was that heavily cropped?
I'm going to get a chance to shoot from the bench, maybe tomorrow, and will be limited to a 70-200, but that's on a 1.3 crop (so 260mm effective length on long end). I've done it before, but I don't seem to be able to get nearly that close to the goalie.

Yup 300mm from the end of the bench (pretty close to the blueline in the one end actually). The shots to that net in that end (like #8) aren't cropped very much at all. I'd say about 25% chopped off the edges max. To get the same shot in the other end though I'd have to go probably 75% crop and the IQ would drop off significantly I think. Instead I can get the scrambles in front where there's 5 or 6 players crashing the net.
Not sure if that helps. I would say on a 1.3x body you'd be good for the closer end at 200mm (260mm effective), and no worries cropping down a little to get tight to the goalie. The far end would probably be out of reach for tight shots anyway. From right at the middle of the ice you'd have to crop down a fair bit both ways. It's still better for goalies though than shooting from the corners IMHO.
Thanks DJ, I wouldn't have thought that only 40mm would make that much of a difference, but apparently it does! I might have to rent a 300/2.8 one day.
I just thought about something, since you are shooting kids, and I'm shooting adults, that should make up the difference in the need for cropping. I will have to see. Thanks again.
