p.1 #1 · Nikon 200-400 vs Nikon 500 F4 AFS II

Hello,
I am considering the purchase of a long lens again. I had a Nikon 200-400F4 previously and I am very familiar with the IQ, build etc. Looking for some insights from those that have had the Nikon 500 F4 AFS II lens and how the IQ compares to the 200-400. Thank you
Jack

i had both at one time and liked the 500 afs2 so much i upgraded to the vr model and sold the 200-400.

my main reason was the 200-400 with tc's wasnt as good as with the 500 and i own fx and dx and my 200-400 had vignetting on fx

Hi Jeff,
Thank you for the response. So now that you went to the VR version on the 500 F4 would you say the difference between that and the AFS II version is significant?

I traded a 200-400 for a 500 AFS I and was very happy with the IQ and reach w/wo TCs. To me they are both heavy but the 500 gave the reach I wanted for small and medium birds.

The 500 VR focuses at exactly the same speed on the AFSII based on my experience.

The major difference to me was better contrast, likely due to the nanocrystal coating.

The VR is a huge plus to me, even when on a tripod as I shoot a lot of low light wildlife.

I love the 200-400 and value the flexibility, performance, and image quality very highly. But if you need the reach, you need the reach... 500/1.4x gives you a 700/5.6 with great quality.
