p.3 #1 · favorite sports photographer?

Matt, much better. and by getting out, I just meant take a look at others work. I am a big believer in "growing through inspiration"

Rick,

I said in my post that I look at everyone's images on the forums I visit and try to better myself through their work.

Trust me I have learned a ton in the last few years from many people

My priority is to make money, Hammy does that better than any other sports photographer I know of and in a way I can learn from and do myself.
He has also given me brilliant advise and suggestions that has worked for me without fail.

I learned years ago the difference of being a great photographer and a profitable one. While I admire great sports pics, I admire people that can make money from them more.

Dj Dunz and Rick D are 2 of the 3 I look to for hockey ideas/inspiration. The 3rd (in no order at all) I haven't seen mentioned is Dennis Wierzbicki. His images speak for themselves like anyone's work, but Dennis has been very helpful to others on this board and some other board I frequent.

There's some great links and inspiration. Some of the my favorites that I hadn't noticed yet that are masters, have been at it for a long time and are still coming up with great work:

For me. It's Mark Rebilas hands down. I am a motorsports photographer myself. But nothing close to the level that Mark is. I look at Mark's blogs and images for ideas and inspiration. He is never afraid to try something different. And he shares what he learns.

This is an interesting thread because it's got me to thinking about the question, the answers, and the reasoning behind both. For me, no doubt, guys like Iooss, Black, Mangin, Miller, Miralle and Seale are phenomenal. I see their work and I shake my head thinking about how they got to where they are with their skill, creative eye, and access. Their photos WOW me, consistently. But if I'm honest, I realize that I don't learn much from them, and in some ways I'm more inspired by their biographies than their photos. Might just be they're so far beyond where I'm at that the leap is too great to contemplate. And then there's guys like Max (pshizzy), Paul and Dennis, in order of my acquaintance with them, their work and, more importantly, what they've offered me through this community. Max is the first guy whose stuff I saw here and did the WOW thing, but somehow, I felt I was looking at something I could aspire to. On top of that, Max is possibly the smartest guy I've ever met (though Dennis could tie for that title), and so willing to share his knowledge and his insight that I don't know how he ever manages to get his own work done. And Max is the guy I can always count on to look at my best work from a shoot and tell me where I should be thinking about going from there. Humbling and inspiring. Paul is just plain inspiring. Watching him shoot Little League baseball, I learned about the role of passion in photography, and I must admit I was a bit surprised to realize that passion could play in to shooting sports. But damned if it doesn't, and for me, Paul's work is the very best example of the places passion can take you when you also have great skill and vision. The kids that Paul shoots love him. The parents of those kids who Paul sells photos to love him. Which tells you a little something about the person behind the inspiring and beautiful work. Dennis is a freakin' genius. If I could talk to Dennis for an hour each day, I'd be a much better photographer for it. And the most remarkable thing is that Dennis would be willing to talk to me for an hour each day if I had the balls to ask him to. As was pointed out in a previous post, Dennis's photography speaks for itself. It's as good as sports photography gets. But it's what Dennis knows that inspires me, not only to become better at this, but to be more knowledgable about what I'm doing.

Finally, just being here, on this board, is something of an inspiration for me. The give and take, the generosity and the knowledge, it's all good. Except when it's not.

A family friend as a child was Fred Morgan. He was a NY Daily News photog that taught me that you 'make' a picture, not 'take' it. He's probably best remembered for his centerfold 4 shot sequence of Frazier decking Ali at MSG in 1971.

I have to add to the list of appreciators of Ed Mulholland and Paul Alesse. Their work speaks for itself, but having the opportunity to shoot next to them has given me a wealth of knowledge and inspiration.

Claus Andersen -- he just doesn't miss and has been patient enough to teach me much of what I know.

Tony Duffy -- one of the lads who got the whole ball rolling and snagged that iconic image of Bob Beamon at the 1968 Olympics.

Geoff Robins -- stunning vision and brought me back into the game after an an educational absence and has helped me see straight and use a computer with almost passable proficiency.

WOW, haven't seen Geoff Robins since the FIFA U-20's. Man sometimes I miss my OJ side of things. I think it's time to get some NHL creds and shoot a couple for the wires.
