p.1 #1 · 580 SpeedLight Sleep Mode

Is there a way to disable a 580EX speed light so it doesn't go to sleep when off the camera

I was doing some off camera flash shooting and if I took to long the flash goes to sleep so I have to walk over turn off and on the flash continue taking pictures. then If I wait too long again I have to turn off and on again. Is there a way to always keep it on

RTFM.

It's Cf #14. Set it to 1 instead of 0.

To use an EX flash as a radio triggered put the wireless switch in "SLAVE" position then press the mode button for 2 sec. until "M" blinks. That puts the flash into "dumb as a brick" slave mode. This is mentioned on page 53 of the 580ex manual in reference to using the flash in manual mode triggered with an ST-E2, but is not explained clearly.

It's not nessecary to put it in slave mode (at least with the 580EXII)

The question was about a 580ex not a 580exII.

That is right Chuck 580 I not the II. So if I use it as a with a radio trigger I put it as slave press the mode button for 2 sec. until "M" blinks. That puts the flash into "dumb as a brick" slave mode can I still adjust the power

or change it to M mode and custom function 0 to 1

Yes. See page 43 of the 580ex manual

When in doubt try both...

Chuck
