p.1 #1 · Earl Telegraph

Here are a few from Berkeley yesterday. I've lived in this area for 25+ years and I've never walked around Berkeley before, what a hoot. I highly recommend taking the bus to get around, there are some real characters who ride the bus, crazy bus women seem to be flourishing. This was a family trip (a dozen of us) to go see the Cal Bears game, which was awesome by the way. A few from the group wanted to have lunch at an Indian restaurant, I wasn't hungry, so I waited outside and had a great chat with Earl. He spends his time using his charisma to acquire change from those who pass by. He told fun stories of events he's witnessed from his spot, and has quite the singing voice. He never mentioned the downside to his lifestyle, and was kind enough to let me take his picture...

Just another comment about spending a half hour with Earl, what an amazing experience to sit next to him and watch people's reactions as they walked about. One girl walked her bike by an obviously knew him, I knew in a millisecond she was a kindhearted person the way she smiled at him. A good 70% tried real hard to pretend he didn't exist, some were a little uncomfortable, and a few gave change but still ignored his existence. I'm not saying any of those responses are right or wrong, but watching it all was really intriguing.

^^ I'll second that... Whatever misfortunes Earl has had to deal with has obviously not affected his positive attitude in life is also what I get from this portrait.

He looks like a happy fellow regardless what life gave to him to deal with.
