p.3 #1 · Show me your 50L shots

Sometimes my boys and girls do not follow their flight plan given to them in our usual pre-job briefing. As a results, we get shots that don't quite work wrt the background, light incidence angle etc.
These are three such shots that have almost made it.

Nice use of the narrow dof on this one.

So is there still an issue with the focus shift? I've been very interested in a normal lens, but not sure with which one. I've noticed that the 5D2 miss focuses with the 35L on quite a few of my shots as well (when not using the center focus).

In any case, these are great examples! The colors are fantastic.

There are some really fantastic examples on this post. I only wish I could get similar results... I'm so frustrated with this lens. When it all comes together it is simply outstanding, however I only wish that happened more often for me. Can anyone share any tips on using this lens to get the best results? I'm not subscribed to image upload yet but please feel free to take a look at this set on flickr. They were focussed using liveview whilst the DOF button was held to get accurate focus. BTW I'm shooting on a 5dmk2. Any advice would be great. I'm on the verge of selling and maybe looking at 85L mk1. Ta, Craig

Finally used one last week, on a 5D mk II. Love this focal length + 1.2.

Craig I checked out the set, from the small view (since there is no large view available) they look fine to me? I quite like the shallow DOF on the upright asparagus. Could you post a larger pic to show us an example of your concern?

Here's one I shot right when I got my 5D2 (when I still had my 50L) It's not great, but considering it's at night and ISO 5000

Aaarrghh, I guess if your not logged in to Flickr then you only see small images. Here's another link if your not a Flickr member where you can see the pics bigger: http://www.photoshelter.com/c/craigstephen/gallery/Stock-photography/G0000Uzg92zOtvfE/
However, I'm not mumping about those pics, it's just that I always seem to be photographing in the grey area of MFD to about 5 feet where the back focus is a real pain.

I'll check those out, but for the record, I am always logged in to flickr I agree thought that if you always find yourself inside the MFD it can get a little dodgy, but given the stock photos you're shooting I can understand why you're there.

Tough call!!

Apples and oranges.

The 50/1.2 has a well documented focus issue.

What you describe is the effects of the less than admirable outer AF-points on the 5D(2).

Using the outer focus points is incidentally described by some as a workaround for the 50/1.2, but that only works if these outer points are up to scratch

The 50/1.2 is still tantalizing though...

So basically the 50L still suffers with AF issues and the 5D2's outer AF points are no good. Guess these 2 things weren't made for each other

Yet, I'm still drawn to it.

I just got myself another copy of the 50L today. It's a UX date-code and it's awesome on my 5D2, I'm very pleased with what I'm getting from it so far. I will be using it extensively in the coming weeks so I'll be sure to keep an eye on it's focusing habits and let you all know.
