UPS just dropped it off. I know that people think that it's a non-starter because of the hood but i guess that I will keep it. BTW...I didn't have the VR I but WOW is this lens good. :>
Don't know why people keep bitching about the hood, I think it's even better designed than the first one. Posted elsewhere about it a few minutes ago, will add detail later. Lens looks phenomenal... pity I don't have a D3x on which to try it right now.
As far as the hood is concerned...It's definitely flexes more than my 24-70 hood, but that's not my issue with it...They added some additional curvature to it so that if you were to stand the lens on end, it would actually rock back and forth. I realize that's not standard practice, but I'm one of those users that actually does that often. It's not a deal breaker for me per se, but it's definitely something that's got me scratching my head. Again it's not a big deal, just something to be aware of.
As for operation - yeah - this lens is the bee's knees... I'm happy to finally have a VR lens in my stable. It's surprisingly more compact than I thought it would be too, but this is definitely not going to be at the top of my travel equipment list.
Hope everyone's enjoying their early christmas gifts

Not to hijack - but what happened to the D3x? Damaged?
This is gonna freak everyone out, but you're probably a belt sander away from flattening out those petals if you really need it to sit flat when it's upside down.
Probably have to replace the hood when you go to sell it, but just a thought (and yes, I may very well grind mine off if I think I need to )

My thoughts exactly...and intend to do that "mod" first chance I get.

Yup. Four-foot drop onto concrete and it died a quick death... I could see the shutter curtain was stuck/locked/jammed/something shut. It's on its way to Nikon now.

Ouch! Hope you get it back soon! That's one of my worst nightmares!

I died a little inside when I read that...just the most sickening sound I can possibly imagine.
It was not a fun experience, lemme tell you. Especially watching it bounce. But they can keep it for as long as they want... all I care about is that it comes back perfect. So long as it comes back to me as-good-or-better-than-new, I can wait for them.
It'll also give me time to get well-acquainted with its little brother, the D3s, which should be arriving at my door by the end of the week. And I haven't been naked during this time, either, since Warner Boyd (met here on FM in the Mustangs thread, user waterflyboy22) was kind enough to lend me a D300+grip to cover for the missing D3x.
why do you want to do that, storage? setting a lens that long down like that just to set it down is asking for a fall.
Herb...
