p.2 #1 · Strobed Inline Speed Skating

Thanks for all the responses and great suggestions!

We have a meet tomorrow but I will only be allowed to use my strobe during warm-ups. I'll have to see what my D3 and 200 2 can do in those conditions.

Appreciate it!

Nice series Craig. I would think that these kids would at least wear kneepads? Although, I'm sure they never fall.... Thanks for sharing.

Did I mention we never talk about falling They do and its not fun!

These are not good they are great... fast movers in a darker enviroment and then illuminated by strobe at a fairly large lens opening...Well done!! I do love the reflection! Did you prefocus on one spot or did you use the Nikon's AF??
Keep up the great work

No prefocus........just Nikons Continuous Focus with 21 point assist AF.

These look awesome. Light is very natural. I would second the comment about working some more with the reflection.

RE: Falling - I've shot short track ICE - they also pad the heck out of the rink walls. When they fall there isn't much to slow them down until the impact... These are fantastic btw.

Great, with the first one being my fave. My only crit is the reflection off the wall. I usually like strobed shots with a little more light falloff... more like you have in the last one.

Very good lighting you got here...I recently shot the ProNSC 1 Initiation in Federal Way, WA. The top 12 racers in the country duked it out...and one came out on top that night. Justin Stelly went 3 for 3 taking top spots in the 1000m, 1600m, and 800m Grand Champs Race. These images were with 430ex's on the 1dMkII and 1Ds.
I'll have to set up remote speedlights next meet to get some better lighting.

Nice job with the strobe setup, and great pictures I think you should work on framing some full reflections of possible think they would look real cool

The only thing better about the natural light shots is the background. As you experiment you might want to look for ways to get that to drop off. Is there a place where you could get a similar shot but have the walls be much farther away from the athlete? The shots are so cool, it just seems worth it to go that extra step to perfect them. One other possibility would be to block the light from the strobe from going in the direction of the wall. The set up might become too cumbersome but worth a thought maybe.

+1 on how great these shots look. Really enjoyed looking at this thread, and everyone's comments on the use of the reflection seems spot on. I am going to have to find a way to shoot inline speed skating because of your work. Thanks for posting.

Wow, super series! Day and night between these and your former shots - but I think/hope you got also some better 1D3 shots (?) otherwise I must also think about switching
