I am new at Macro photography but am interested in insect and flower photography. I have a Nikon D300, Sigma 150 f2.8 Macro lens, 4 way focus rail, Feisol carbon fiber tripod, 1 each SB800 and 2 each SB600's. I am thinking about buying a Nikon R1 flash system. With the equipment I have is there a better way to do it? Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.
hello Tom, I am using R1 and also am using SB800, SB600, But I prefer using SB800 with DIY and other branded diffuser. Why not try to use your SB800 or SB600 since you already have them with you instead of buying another R1.
I once used the Sigma 150 and fashioned a bracket--ridiculously simple one--that screwed onto the tripod collar. Used both SB600 and SB800 at times. Worked pretty darn well and the bracket could be tweaked somewhat to get the light even closer to the end of the lens. The pic below was from when I used it on a D2X.
Is there anything that could go on the hotshoe like that and hold the flash because not all lenses have the collar and it would be easier to buy one for the hotshoe.
What commercial brackets do you recommend. The R1 uses 2 flashes, is there an advantage to using 2 flashes? If so is there a bracket readily available or do I home make it?
