p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · m42/5d2 workaround

So I finally took the leap and bought an adapter last week. It arrived in the mail yesterday and, as predicted, a couple of the lenses that I really wanted to try block the mirror at infinity focus. I was a bit bummed but figured I would try a workaround.

I just cut a circle of black felt and it put it around the mount at the back of the lens. I depressed the tiny pin for the auto/manual switch and left the lens on manual. When I mounted the lens on the camera I had full aperture control and no mirror hitting the back of the lens at infinity.

I can't see any downside to this fix at this point in time. It does put the focus/dof scale over to the left side of the lens/camera but this is no big deal. I would like to find something that is a bit more sturdy than the felt but this definitely works for now. I don't need to alter the lenses or the camera and a couple of gem lenses are getting used again: SMC Takumar 50/1.4 and S-M-C Takumar 35/3.5

The company I bought the adapter from was Fotodiox through ebay. $7.15 for the adapter, fast shipping from US to Canada. The adapter is black anodized so it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb on the 5d2. Great purchase!

I would recommend using something other than felt. Felt sheds fibers that could end up in your mirror box and on your sensor. Something like thin cardboard from the side of a cereal box would be better and more consistent in terms of thickness as well. If it is cut to the right size it might even keep the pin depressed as well.

smileyguy,
I believe you are using hyperfocusing but I think that's all you need.

@debuggerus, not sure I understand what you mean. Could you clarify?

@pengland, agreed. The felt was right there and I figured I'd try "something" first. I have since cut circles out of slim plastic that work perfectly. It still puts the focus/distance scale off to the side or bottom but not really that big a deal.

I'm thrilled to be using the lenses. I love the wee 35/3.5 and I also have a 2x adapter for them all which almost gets me a reasonable macro set up with the 50/1.4. I'm looking forward to using them more.
