Trigger has been pulled. I'll post a comparison with the Planar MM in a few weeks. Unfortunately, based on what Jordan has said about these two lenses, I have an uneasy feeling that I might be trying to fit two 85/1.4 lenses in my 'macro and telephoto' case.

Regarding bokeh, I dug up this sample from the Planar, which was one of the images that convinced me not to keep it. The Rokinon won't ever do this.

It's obvious to me that those harsh lines in the image were drawn by gremlins that live in your C/Y to EOS adapter (I would have blamed the trolls in your camera, but in my experience, the 5D is troll-free).

P.S. Thanks for posting the shot.

It's really nice to see that, thus far, no one has received a poor sample. That in itself is also very impressive for such an inexpensive lens.

Like Paul has mentioned, I can't wait to get the fast 35 when it's released.

Oh, right - the 35/1.2 - damn!

Yeah, if they pull off a 35/1.2 that is as good as this 85/1.4, that would really be an accomplishment. Even if they want to charge $500 for it (and even if its t-stop is closer to f1.4), I'll be all over it like white on rice.

That bokeh looks just like the Sigma 50. Super soft yet contrasty, if that makes sense.

That's it! That is it! I've had it! I'm buying this lens tonight when I get home! I'm sick of reading all of these threads praising this lens while I do not yet own it.

I hear this lens has better aperture control for the Pentax mount. Is this true? And I also hear it's more expensive for us Canadians to purchase. Is this also true?

Ok, I know this may be slightly off topic, but please don't take offense. If anyone can help me, I would greatly appreciate it. I've never shot a manual focus lens and from what I've read the Rebel line should almost never do this, because we have crappy viewfinders or something. I'm about to buy a T1i, how hard is it to correctly focus on that or even last year's XS? Thanks in advance.

Edit - I just read that maybe I can use Live View to focus? But is the viewfinder that much better in FF bodies?

Oops hahaha someone

It's a matter of practice. I have no problem manual focusing with the T1i or XSi. Then again, I grew up with manual focus stuff. Replacing the eyecup with the Olympus magnifying eyepiece (forgot the model) helps.

Live view is ok if your camera is on the tripod and your subject is not moving. My hand moves too much from the time I press the button to the time it goes from live view to snapping the picture. Plus, if your subject is not stationary, the live view is too slow to let you frame/focus it. I prefer taking multiple quick pictures instead.

Please, we must be careful about saying such things. Someone from Samyang might get wind and decide to raise the price!

I'm pretty sure both the Pentax and Nikon versions have camera-controlled, mechanical aperture.

I'm a Canuck and I got mine from cametaauctions on e-bay for $254 USD plus $32 (fast) shipping, and then I paid the tax when it arrived, of course. No extra "customs brokerage fees" because they ship via USPS Express. Still a helluva-deal, IMO

One thing I have to say I really like: they have made the focus helicoid work based on how your manufacturer's focus rings work. That is, Nikons focus in the same direction as all Nikon lenses focus...the Canon mount one focuses in the same direction all Canon mount lenses focus. It'd be nice if the other third party manufacturers would be kind enough to do this.

The lens is a KA-spec lens. Full aperture control but you need to manually enter FL for SR to work correctly.

It's AI-S spec for Nikon.

I noticed that immediately when I unpacked mine. A very pleasant surprise, since I assumed that would be one of the things that bugged me about the lens (if it had gone the wrong way). Turns out nothing at all bugs me about it. As you say, the hood and cap are sub-par, but that's so close to irrelevant. A nice metal screw on hood is $10 and, well... caps schmaps.

One thing to note though. I found the coatings on the front element to be "squeaky", if you know what I mean. Normally I use a clean, soft, cotton cloth (my T-shirt) to give lenses a quick wipe here and there. When I tried this with the Rokinon, it was "squeaky". In other words, there was resistance there; almost as if the coatings had "grip", if you know what I mean. This tells me I don't want to be subjecting that surface to very much cleaning, so I now have a good quality UV filter on it. Oddly enough, it is the only lens that I use a filter on.

P.S. LensPen did seem to work fine on it just before I installed the UV filter, though.
