I love selected Nikkor zoom lenses (14-24, 24-70, 200-400, etc.) but their primes, except for the 200mm f/2.0 and longer lenses, are not quite as good as those on the Canon (a disclaimer here: to me, at least). The long Nikkor lenses are excellent but quite a bit more expensive than those of Canon plus they are not readily available. Keeping up with two systems is taking a toll and I am about to give up my "dark side" setup and just stick with one and that will be Canon for me .. There are new and excellent Canon lenses, like the 17 TS-E, 24mm f/1.4 II, etc. to make up for the really top-drawer Nikkor 14-24mm. Now, I am just "praying" that Canon would upgrade the 24-70mm, incorporating IS with improved optics .

My experience with CANON 1 series D's and the D700 came down to ergonimics really. In terms of IQ, you'd be hard pressed one way or another, and that is also true in terms of responsiveness, AF etc.
Interestingly enough, for me, the D700 felt porkier and heavier in my hands than my 1Ds and a D3 I shot side by side.
I thought about posting it on the Nikon forum but then it would be skewed the other way.
Probably yeah... I have used/owned both systems, although I am a Canon exclusive atm... So, I can try to be non-biased
Let me ask you this: do you feel limited -in any way- by using the Nikon D700? If so, why do you think that a mkIII will be a more suitable solution for you?

Good question my friend, good question.
No, I don't feel limited by the D700 at all. It's a great tool. They're both great tools.
It's just....when I put that old 1D in my hands last night...it spoke to me. (sorry to be corny)
I do feel a little limited by Nikons lens selection though. I shoot mostly primes and they're all the old "D" lenses. They're old and clunky.
The L lenses have a "sexyness" about them that can't be described.
I know how it feels to one foot on each camp for over a year. I never had any problems with my Canon bodies, including my 1D Mark III that I sold quite sometime ago. I have been a Canon shooter since film days and somehow it lingers....no, persists, more like it. Nikon has great cameras and so does Canon. Again, that's my own experience which may differ than yours. I don't see any real advantage one system over the other in that respect. I could be happy with either system. As of right now, Canon has the edge in lenses, mostly their prime lenses, as I mentioned above.

Hey, if you want to spent your money on corny and sexy stuff... Go with Canon It makes Nikon look dull by comparison... just like their colors (sorry, couldn't resist)

I don't know about the sexyness of L lenses but I agree with your assessment of Nikkor lenses. Those are comparable to Canon lenses before USM.... , although optically they are fine.

You too Joshua? The 17 TS-E and 24 f/1.4 II convinced me to give up the 14-24 which then pushed me to give up the rest of my Nikon gear. The only Nikon lens I miss even a little bit is the 200-400, though my stellar copy of the 100-400 is keeping me pretty satisfied.

Absolutely nothing sexy about the 1d-series bodies. Feels like holding onto a brick. I much prefer the curves of Nikons
It's strange how there are people who think Canon's control are really bad and you have people like me who can't figure out what Nikon's control are. Canon just comes to me I don't have to read the manual for most things. Nikon I scratch my head a lot.
Anyhow if you want to and it doesn't cost you why not? Unless you feel you'll flip flop again after...
I just sold off all my Nikon gear after using it the past year or so for the zooms. I started off with Canon and guess I'm just too accustomed to it. While the 14-24 is unequaled, I didn't find the 24-70 to be better than Canon's version. I'm not sure if Canon has retooled their factories or anything but the last two Canon 24-70s that I've purchased new within the last 2 years have been wonderfully sharp out of the box. Years ago I went through 4-5 copies just to get one acceptable one. Now I'm all Canon again and praying that their next 5D will have an AF system that at is at least comparable to the 7D.
Interesting, I am considering a switch from canon to nikon as I get ready to switch to full frame. Maybe I'll buy all your nikon gear.
Reasons to stick with canon in my opinion:
Great primes
Great sensors with more MP
lighter quality zooms (their f/4 series)
In general cheaper than nikon
Reasons to stick with nikon:
Stronger more durable low end bodies
I really like the duel memory card slots in the nikon D300s
better wide zooms (14-24 is wider and better than either the 16-35 or 17-40)
