p.3 #1 · OM for Nikon

The only thing that is a little crappy, is that the smallest Nikon body that will meter manual lenses is the D300. A D90 would be such a nice combo with the OM 100mm f/2.8, and the viewfinder is fairly good for manual focusing. On the other hand, it's always possible to buy one of those shoe-mount meters. Have anybody tried one? How exact are they?

Something like an L-308 would probably be easier to use, but why on earth would you grab an OM 100/2.8 for say $80 and then this mount conversion for another $80 when you could get a 105/2.5 for the same price and it's close in size and a far better lens?

1. The Zuiko is 60% of the length and around half the weight of the Nikkor
2. I own the Zuiko already
3. In this country (Thailand), the Nikkor is between $150 and 200
4. It's fun to try something different. I also have the Nikkor 105mm f/1.8. Very nice lens, but it's big, and sharpness degrades beyond typical portrait distances. The Zuiko is very sharp, also at infinity, particularly at f/4.0 and 5.6.

The shoe mount meters are a larger PITA than simply checking the histogram afterwards. They're reasonably accurate for normal range lenses (35-50mm-e).

Honestly? Lack of metering was never all that much of an issue with either the D50 or D40 for me. I wouldn't shoot action with non-CPU lenses on them, but chimping the histogram, is not that big a deal and much more reliably than stop-down metering as well.
