My findings so far look good for the 7D; it's noticeably better than my 40D (which is now to be sold) and looks like it might be in the 1D II league. Still have a lot more testing to do, but if it continues holds up, I'll sell my 1D II. The 7D noise is excellent, with ISO 800 very good, at least a stop better than 1D II, and the pixel density advantage is huge for birding. The IQ is excellent, better than the 1D II IMO with detail manifestly much higher.
The LCD on the 7D is superb, the build is excellent, the video is a very nice feature ...Show more →
Thanks Whayne
If you should ever take some surfing shots with the 7D, I'd love to see some, please.

I think that in your situation you should just stick to the 1dII. I would not discount build quality especially since you live in Finland! Doesn't it get pretty cold? I would think weather proofing would be a high prerequisite!
Thanks to both for your opinions!
Well, though I live in Finland, I haven't had many situations where build quality would be necessary, because I always use a raincover over my camera when photographing in rain/snow.
And yes, in winter we have quite cold in here (under 0 farenheits), but not all the time, as people often think

Yes, 7D definitely has its pros in many perspectives. One stop more would be great for this darkness we have here. The LCD on mark 1D II is completely rubbish so there would also be a huge improvement.
Do you have any comments on the AF, do you think it is good enough to BIF?
What I've read on other forums is that many still think 1D II has faster focusing. Also I'm a bit worried, that on 7D there are only 19 AF-sensors, while 1D II has 45. I mean its more complicated to compose the shot, for example if I want the target near right upper corner...
So far my testing has been with the 100-40L a lens that I've had a lot of trouble with on the 40D for fast action and bif's in AI servo. The 7D has so far had a much higher keeper rate with this lens on par with the 1D II I'd say. I now need to use my 500 f/4L IS and 300 f/2.8L IS as they perform much much better in AI servo due to their much faster AF speed. I have high hopes for the 7D in surfing as even my 40D did very well with the 500, as good as my 1D II.
The 1D II does have more coverage but I've not found the 7D's coverage a problem and the set up of the 7D is highly customizable, having even more AF options than the 1D II. I currently have it set up so I have 4 different AF choices at the touch of a different button.
I can't comment yet on how fast the 7D is compared to the 1D II, but should have an idea by the weekend. My impressions using the 100-400L are they are comparable.
