Sometimes I feel like it's cheating, but I maintain a saltwater reef tank, almost for the purpose of just taking photos of the amazing corals, inverts, and fish. It's almost like taking a picture of someone else's photograph or painting. Either way it yields some really interesting shots with a macro. here's one of my mespilia globulus (sea urchin) almost at 1:1 magnification:

When it comes to colours, nothing beats sea creatures. That's an excellent shot, the colour and bokeh is simply out there!!

I use a spot light on the subject, and a soft rubber hood in the lens to reduce reflections from the aquarium glass.
