Does anyone know if the 1dmk4 video capabilities will have autofocus that you can change as you are shooting video?

On the 5dmk2 you had to use autofocus to preset it, shoot, then stop shooting to change it again.

No AF during video.
On 5D2 you don't need to stop video to change your focus.
Just manual focus the lens.

I think the whole idea of using a DSLR for video is to be able to use wide aperature lenses for 'motion picture' quality shallow DOF which is impossible with the small sensors of digicams. However, if you're shooting shallow DOF with a DSLR, any automatic AF would seem too fast & jerky. Take a look at any motion picture and you'll notice that focusing is usually VERY slow...the kind of AF that the camera would do is way too fast and not suitable for that 'motion picture feel'. I'm guessing that if you want to shoot basic 'home movies' that a cheap digicam is MUCH better suited for that task. A DSLR video is completely different in that regard.

I am just learning how to shoot/focus movie/video with the 5DII, though I've had it for a while. It is a WAY different experience than a digicam. I find the best way is to start your movie with the AF-ON lock/start, then as your movie progresses, be a part of it by manually focusing your lens. It's surely not for the unskilled, like any craft, takes a bit of learning. My first 5 or so were horrid and blurry and bouncy. But as I calmed, slowed down my shooting style, learned it more, I got the full artistic range of whatever lens I have on there (right now a Sigma 50mm macro) ...

Anyway, it's not a "point and shoot" kind of movie making experience, just different.

I agree that quick home movies where you HAVE to get the subject/moment, one wouldn't use the DSLR movie function unless you had had a great deal of practice in the particular setting before-hand (and REALLY knew your lens focusing well).

I wonder how you do auto focus DURING shooting. It is a lot easier to use live view and magnifier to achieve manual focus but it is hard to do that when shooting is in progress.

Thanks

With my MkIV set on AFServo and Livemode focusing, I can hold the AF-ON button down and autofocus while shooting video.

Wow, I have to see if that works for the 5DII. I was not using AFServo, maybe that's they key.

That's not the same AF you get when shooting stills though, it's inferior, but can still be helpful.
