Was in Portugal for holydays and decided to try surf (1st time). My max range is 200 mm on a 40d and that is obvious seeing the highly cropped photos. I had to go inside the see with water over my knees and still too far from action.
Im no pro but ill give you some feedback. None of the maneuvers here would be considered "cool" if you will. The first two they are obviously falling, and in the third images he's just squatting. If you enjoyed shooting surf, sit back and watch it for a while and you will see the peak action moments. top turns, bottom turns, barrels, etc. my longest lens right now is a 200 as well, it doesnt always have to be all about the surfer, throw some landscape in there once in a while. hope that helps a bit. pick up a surf mag, always great images in them!
Great pics and daring shooting... I've been sitting on the beach and been dry when the big wave comes and washes away my towel and camera bag! You wading out into the sea knee high is awesome
The pics look very sharp and great colors especially considering that you cropped them...
#1 is my favorite and not being a surfer I wouldn't have guessed that was was falling.
For first time shooting, you did well with what is sometimes a difficult technical issue of exposure. With white water and black wet suits can be challenging.
Photographing good action requires knowledge of the sport and it certainly helps if you have good surfers. This takes time and practice.
That can be mastered, but then the really hard part is getting a signature style to your surf photos. I see a lot of similar well executed shots on this site, but the stand outs are the ones where the photographer has developed a look and that is soemthing that can take years.
There are a lot of good surfing action in Portugual and probably not a lot of photographers when you compare the numbers to California, Hawaii and the Gold Coast of Australia, so there is opportunity there.
pull back alittle.. its really more about the wave..that happens to have someone lacerating it to pieces imho.. perhaps start by not using the center focus point (use a lateral/peripheral sensor instead)...great exposure though..maybe a tad heavy handed on the sharpening perhaps..

Thanks for seing my blog. It is that help that i'm looking for to develop my skiils. I'm not in Portugal. I live in Angola and just spend part of my holidays there, here in Luanda i have never seen any surfers, but i will keep looking.

Yes it is that. photos donīt have any PP besides high sharp filter. I donīt know if it is me, lenses or AIServo, but always have to use it a lot.
