Marketing on the forums, with smileys or not, is still marketing on the forums.
I think learning is a smarter investment than buying gear. I believe "investing in yourself" is the smartest investment anyone can make.
I think Skype is great!
It is FREE. Pretty amazing to someone who has never used it before. I don't make money selling Skype service, it is FREE to anyone. I think that is COOL and tell others about it so they can use the internet to connect via voice.
Why? Because emails and text messages like this one can often be misinterpreted because the receiving party may misunderstand the intended tone of the sender.
In fact, I have had phone calls with photographers around the world that I would never have had without Skype's free service. I find that COOL too.
So, I am sorry if I misinterpreted your message in any way. You ought to give it a try or give me a call sometime. We would probably better understand one another if we talked instead of typed.
I don't know about others, but Steady's comments have definitely helped me along, and my one free phonecall was very helpful in one area where I was stuck. So what's not to love?
Besides, in my own consulting business, which is not that far removed from mentoring, I don't give a free first consultation. So all the more power to Steady's elbow...

+1
I'm glad there are people willing to help others around. There are tons of lurkers around who are afraid to post - and get ridiculed. How many times have you read "first time poster...been lurking for a year"...
Steady is always willing to help - others, are sometimes willing to help - and then some only want to disrupt the learning process...just like grade school.
hk_mtbr, I agree. I was referred to this site by a great photographer in my area. At first, I was pretty excited to learn, share, and get feedback--until I saw what feedback was. Steady has made me feel welcome, and encouraged me to keep learning. I hate it when people put comments like "If you can't stand the heat," or "You need to learn to take criticism better,' etc, etc. Seriously, this isn't a contact sport, people. Everyone learns in different ways.
The long and BUMPY road to success can be challenging...it is often made more fun if you have friends with whom you can share your journey and experiences.
