Thom Hogan commented on the published MTF chart for this lens so I thought I would have a look

http://imaging.nikon.com/products/imaging/lineup/lens/af/dx/af-s_dx_micro85mmf_35g_ed_vr/index.htm

I have never seen anything like it. A virtual horizintal straight line!!

should be good

Cheers

Nikon 28 1.4 does exist by the way noobs, they stopped making it because they didn't sell enough of them

You can find the Mark I version of the Canon 24/1.4 for under $1000, and it's a fine lens. The 28/1.8 is not as good, but can be had used for around $300. Or you can buy those lenses brand new. On the Nikon side, the 28/1.4 is not longer made; its used-market price is frankly insane. Why should Nikon users have to buy Sigma lenses in the 24 to 30mm range? This is not some esoteric focal range. There's a real need for a fast wide prime.

Only thing confusing about this is why it's designated a DX lens? At 85mm FL, shouldn't really need for it to be DX... Anyway, I'll betcha it will work fantastic on FX with some light vignetting wide open.

The optical forumula is much less exotic than that of the 60mm and 105mm lenses. Only one ED element, no aspherics. The new 60mm micro lens has 1 ED and 2 asperical elements. I believe that the latter are not cheap to make. And I beleive their main role is to reduce off-axis aberrations. DX means a narrower field, and less need for fancy pants elements.

millsart wrote:
If you were a DX user and wanted macro, why not use the already very good 60mm or 105mm micro lens they have ? Those are both great glass and work on both DX as well as FX.

Surely the only justification is price. They are targeting the price sensitive low end of the market. This does make sense, since sales of low end cameras far exceed sales of the D300 and D700.

There is a tendency for forum users to whine, and yet what matters to Nikon is profit. Most people probably do not post in forums, except perhaps when about to buy new gear. So we are not representative.

Sounds like a smart move for Nikon despite my only body being a D700. My wife who has a D40 will love having a cheaper alternative to get into macro. Most new photographers don't understand why this new DSLR that is relatively expansive compared to their point and shoot has a limitation that the cheap P&S did not.. Macro.

I didn't understand it at first, not being able to shove the lens 5 inches away from something and taking a shot. My wife still doesn't understand the logic and would love to get into macro.

I think a lot of good points have been made that FX users are a drop in the bucket for Nikon compared to how many potential long-term customers they can gain if they keep all of the entry level shooters happy. So this move makes perfect sense and I will probably be picking one of these lenses up for the wifey when they are available.

I am just happy they have improved the 70-200, just wish it was priced the same as the old one.

Holy Cow Poop! That is awsome.

No mention of it being compatible with TCs .... that would clinch it for me.

Sure it will. Crop factor does not change magnification factor, just FOV.

I think they stopped selling it because there was some Lead components in there.

I will disagree. Nikon always thinks with their pocketbook, as they should. The nice thing about Nikon is that they also care about the photographer (in general). I think that this lens is a win-win lens for Nikon and the photographer.

I'm going to go to the Henry's photoshow this weekend. Will take an extra CF card along and will test this lens on a D3 at the Nikon booth.

If Nikon is all about pleasing mass-market, I get to question this as a guy from Canon land. Where is 17-40F/4, 24-105F/4IS, and 70-200F/4/IS competitors? Especially 17-40F/4 and 70-200F4 are great lenses with cheap pricetag compared to Nikon's couterparts.

Okay well I'll ask to try it with TCs.

Like i said before, if they had been a good selling item i doubt they would have stopped making them. And had it been a hot seller there would be a viable used market. The used market is crazy because frankly they didn't make a lot of them because no one bought them, hence it's rarity.

From what Thom Hogan has been saying recently, he still feels a new 24mm prime is soon to be released, along with an 85mm f1.4 AF-S VR. Possibly due to production limitations at this point, but he feels the announcements may have just been delayed a little.

Hey Tim,

Does not interest me. I don't want a bunch of DX lenses when I can have FX lenses instead. 3.5? No way. I want at least 2.8. The 55mm F2.8 AIS Micro Nikkor I am using is fine for closeups on my current D300 bodies.

Has anyone seen a review yet? I know sometimes they give new lenses out to selected pro photogs early and the reviews come out at release.

Well, of course DX is such past history that none of the pros use it anymore. They probably tried to find someone to try it out but everyone turned their nose up at it.
