Could it just be excess oil on the legs from production? When my 6x 5560 arrived I had to give the legs a good clean as I kept getting oil on my hands when carrying it.

I use a damp cloth and soapy water to clean the tripod legs whenever they get very dusty or muddy, then leave the tripod extended for a while to dry fully.
It took a few cleans to get rid of the slight oily feel when the Gitzo was new but it's ok now.
