p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Mt Shasta morning IR

In anticipation of Tom green's comments, I offer 2 variations on the plain BW shot I posted yesterday. I shot this one in HDR (but am just stumbling around with tone mapping) and I mostly increased the noise in the shot. Anyway, I have a reasonably contrasty version, followed by an uber-contrasty one for Tom et.al. I'll be interested in preferences.

IR and none IR (other post) are both great - in this case I prefer IR #1

Hmmm...
I was really liking the first version, but then you threw me for a loop with the contrasty version, which I normally prefer. I'm a bit undecided in this instance, however.
I like the easy, smooth, relaxed feel of the first.
I'm a sucker for textures and contrast though. I suppose that framed and on a wall, I'd end up choosing #2. Not better; just subjective personal preference.

Thanks guys. I'm more in favor of the first one myself. The second is for Tom of course. I'll see what he thinks. In a low light situation, IR doesn't exactly shine at it's best.

I'm for the first one also. Awesome shot. Much better than #2. The sky in the top left is the only drawback.

Don't you mean you processed it as an HDR? Really think its a great image that would be even better if blending via layers were applied.

What camera did you use?

Peter
Thanks for your comments. Sorry, I processed the shot in HDR (I would need a Sony, or I think a Pentax to actually shoot in HDR right now). I took a spread of 3 shots with my newly converted Canon Powershot G 10 in RAW. The tone mapping is quite new to me, and I think I got a much noisier image than a single image using a mixture of Nik Tonal Contrast, and Nik Silver (for the actual BW conversion) using the High Structure preset. I have been shooting a converted Canon Rebel 300D, but this is more compact, and takes up very little room in my pack. Couldn't do much about the sky though. I have a color version in the Landscape Forum from my 5 D II.

Both are very striking shots. Whenever I can't decide something like this, I usually combine them. Take the best parts out of both. Do you have a shot that is not IR? If so, you might also convert that and use the best of that, as well, since sometimes IR looks a little fakey Anyway, if I had to choose,, #1 would be my favorite.

All the best,

Endre

Tim, my choice - gads! - is #1.
IR does not have to be harsh to be beautiful, and there is a beauty in #1 that I don't find in #2.
I like the way the road leads in from one side and the fence from the other. good eyes! good DOF, by the way.
cheers, tom
