Hello, I will shot some pictures to a friend in natural light, he is an actor and would like to use them to show to differents castings as his presentation. It must be in natural light because he requested it and my equipment is:
- Canon 5D MKII
- 100mm f/2
- 24-70mm f/2.8

Lastolite reflector white+silver
Lastolite diffusor 2 stops, it could be used as reflector too.

The weather will be cloudy at 14:30 pm, so good light, best as the light will be diffused naturally.

I would like to hear some tips for this type of photography or if there a serious web site with tuttorial and tips!

I just took a look at: http://peterhurley.com to see examples...

Thanks in advance for you help

I sent you some info. Best to take a look around at other portfolios. Check their angles and style of shooting. LA casting directors generally want something a bit different than New York. Also, theatre headshots are typically a bit different look than movie/film headshots.

You have the perfect gear already. Just find some shade with a decent background and start shooting.

City trader,

Wondering how the shoot turned out?
5D mkll and 100 f2 make a nice combo for headshots.
I often shoot with an 85 to get the angles but 100 focal length on a ff is perfect as far as perspective.

Hello!

I'm agree with you, the 100f2 is a nice lens for the 5DMKII!

The effects of the reflectors will be minimal when the weather is cloudy. Traditionally you use the reflector to bounce a (strong and directional) lightsource into the shadows, to open them up. But with cloudy weather the light is very diffused and non-directional anyway. For the reflectors to have any effect, you will have to use them very closeby - as in uncomfortable for the model.

Thanks for your answer, after some tests, I'm planning to use a mobile Softbox adapted to a speedlite, even in a sunny day.

My question is, which is the ideal size of the softbox (in the market there are square 60cm x 60cm and even rectangular 40cmx80cm) to use with a speedlite like a 580EXII? (Guide number 58)

Part II

If a single Speedlite is all you have, rather than a softbox I would recommend a diffusion panel. Aim the Speedlite at the panel from further back than you could with a box and the beam spread will cover a large area of the panel, creating the soft light you're looking for.

(A single Speedlite, though, may not have the power to create enough light to do the job. Using the sun and reflectors may be a more workable solution if you can't buy or rent more-powerful strobes.)

I hope this helps.

I do this stuff a lot! I generally will use a translucent fabric, which allows me to shoot anytime of day, pretty much. I use a large round diffuser from Calumet.

Thanks for your answer, is very useful!...

In the case I want to use the speedlite in combination with the sun, the diffusion panel option could be ok!?... what size of diffusion panel could you recommend?

In the case I plan in a future to use Alienbees, the B400 model it's ok for this kind of shooting?... Will I have to use a Softbox with this unit!?

Thanks!

Don't you already have a diffusion panel?

Lastolite diffusor 2 stops, it could be used as reflector too.

Diffusion panels are great for outdoor use. You can aim a Speedlite through them, you can diffuse the sun with them, you can use them as a background...the uses are limited only by your imagination.

In general, bigger is better because it gives you more options. You can use a closer or more-focused light on them for a smaller light source, or a more-distant or less-focused light for a larger source.

Of course the bigger they are the more unwieldy they are to transport and to handle on location, so you have to find the size that fits your personal situation.

With a monolight like the Alien Bees you can use umbrellas, softboxes, diffusion panels...whatever you'd like. The standard reflector that comes with it may be all you need for some shots.

For outdoor use I'd recommend more power than the B400. You can turn down the power on a B800 or B1600, but you can't turn up a B400 beyond its 160 jules. So get the most-poweful one that is within your budget for your first one, and then you can get lower-powered ones later for multi-light setups.
