Forgive me for this subject. But with the release of the 7D (which is looking great BTW) I just find it more and more apparent that Canon is missing another 35mm sensor DSLR that will fit between the 5D & 1Ds. The mythical 3D would fit that quite well I would think. This new DSLR would many of the features the new 7D has (minus the FPS so as to not intrude on the 1D). Now price the 5DII closer to the $2000 figure (say $2300 cause of the video feature) to fight against the new Sony's A850 and the 3D to go up against the Nikon's D700. Just thinking out loud here

Search for 3D. There are a lot of threads.

Even though Canon hasn't released the 3D yet, the camera has already been released and reviewed on many rumor sites and in forums like this as well.

We have to wait for Nikon to release the D700x so that Canon will (eventually) respond with the 3D.

Canon got outgunned by the D300 and has come up with the excellent, if over pixelled, 7D.

Nikon appear to have gone off the boil after the D300/D700/D3 releases. The D300s is a rather uninspiring upgrade.

What about going the other direction and not filling that hole with a 3D, but simple updated original 5D for less. Essentially either a Rebel FF or a 55D FF. Any new camera lines at this point will confuse the consumer even more - I think. I don't think Canon is going to do anything unless they have to respond to a Nikon D90x Full Frame.

after the release of 7D, I suspect the writting is on the wall, no cheaper FF cameras from Canon for some time. Maybe sony's release will put some pressure over time.

That's what the 5DII should have been... cheaper! As I predicted 12+ months ago, the 5DII was a warmed-over 50D (i.e. a full-frame 50D), and really should have had the 7D's features for the price tag, plus a few hundred perhaps.

There is now a place for the 'mythical' 3D in Canon's lineup, especially now that all they need to do is slap a FF sensor in the 7D and call it good. That's well within Canon's repertoire based on the last few years, although I'm not sure why anyone would ever buy a 5DII after it's released. Unless, of course, it was priced south of $2k...

Until we see what the 7D and D300s produce in the way of photos, that is purely speculation. The DP review of these cameras will be most eagerly awaited.
May be "small but incremental" would have been a better despcription than uninspiring

I don't see it happening. Adding the new 7D features into a 5DII will place such a camera even closer to 1D territory. Perhaps the Canon compromise will be to put FF into a 1DIV at around 16-20MP (my guess is 18), which is something I would very much like - finally a Canon sports/action camera that is also FF and high resolution for the many other applications a non-specialist photographer like me would find useful. If such a 1DIV did materialize though, I suspect it will remain quite close to the usual 1D price point of $4500-5000...
