A trio of surreal night images using light painting.
#1: "Ocotillo Stars". A one-hour exposure in the desert. I fired a flash burst with a red gel at the beginning of the exposure to light the foreground ocotillo cactus.
#2: "Thunder Hole". During a 20-minute exposure, I fired my flash several times with alternating yellow and red gels to freeze the action of incoming waves. I then fired a series of bursts with a blue gel to give a cool tone to the background rocks.
#3: "Towers of the Moon". A blend of three separate exposures. One of several minutes for the rocks, lit by a LED lantern placed about 50 feet away to provide a soft, even glow. Another of 30 seconds to record the stars and moonlit clouds in the sky. A third short exposure to record the moon. Blended in CS4.
Just for fun, check out my latest Blog post on the relationship between suffering and great art -- with an open invitation to share your own nature-related trauma . . .
All three are very well done here. I think the third is my favorite. I am not keen on the colors created by the lighting in 1 and 2, but there is no denying that it took a special and creative effort to make it happen. Beautiful series.

Wow, this one was dead for a while and then came back out of no where! Didn't even realize anyone had commented on it recently, thanks Mark for dragging this out from the depths of obscurity! Of course, it will head back there in no time I'm sure.
thanks for the comments!

No problem. It did not seem like enough people had seen it!
