p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 5D2 LiveView with alternative lenses...

Hey folks,

I recently purchased a Zenitar 16mm fisheye for my 5D2. Everything is working great, except whenever I use LiveView in Av mode, the camera changes the ISO as if it were in auto ISO mode. It maintains a shutter speed of 1/50 and changes the ISO to gain the correct (well relatively correct) exposure setting.

This only happens in LiveView mode. I use LiveView quite often with the fisheye because it's difficult to focus through the viewfinder.

Is this common with alternative lenses on the 5D2? Is there a remedy?

Thanks!

You should probably post this question in the Canon Gear forum.

I disagree. If he is only finding this issue with an alternative lens, then the question belongs here.

Jason, I can't help because I don't have a 5DII, but someone here will have the answer.

I don't have a 5D2...but can you try to reproduce the same behaviour with a canon lens in MF mode(also tape over the electric contact)? If you can reproduce it then I think it is working as design -- you may not like it

Cheers

I would try two things...

Make sure you have the latest Firmware loaded. This added more manual control with Live View and video etc. Also try setting the Live View function to "Stills Only"...

What happens when you set the shutter speed and aperture manually? It might be that there is an issue with the lens contacts on this fisheye. With fisheyes its a good idea to use manual settings as bright sky etc can really mess up the overall exposure...

Do you happen to have the Av/Tv safety shift (or whatever that might cause it) enabled in the custom function?

I do not have any MF lenses that I can mount on my 5D2, but I just tried shooting with the body cap. Live view, Av mode, fixed ISO. I managed to shoot a picture at the ISO I set and shutter speed well below 1/50s.

The only time I can get my ISO to change in AV mode (and it changes to ISO 100) is when I have Stills+Movie and Movie Display set in the Live View Functions settings.

When I use Stills only and Stills display, the ISO stays as I have set it.

I think it is the Movie mode setting that is causing the change in ISO. If I have that set, then the ISO changes to 100 but then is adjusted to keep the shutter at 1/50. I do not use the Movie mode on mine so I couldn't tell you why it works that way. Also, just wondering what firmware do you have?

Thanks for the help everyone!

Rachel, I think you're right! It must be because I'm in the stills + movie mode. It's gonna be a bit of a hassel to switch between settings. Can't win them all I guess.

Not sure if you can do this but could you set one of your camera user settings for stills and movie or still only - which ever one you use the least? Is that a setting that the user settings remembers?

Yep, just tried it. You can set one of your camera user settings for one set up (I would probably use it for the set up I use the least). Then leave your menu setting for the one you use the most.

Also, it is the second option that you select when in movie mode, which is "movie display" that causes the ISO change (not just selecting movie mode).

You are welcome, Jason. I haven't used the user settings on the 5D2 but I sure loved it on the other bodies.

You don't strictly need to change the live view display. In Av mode with a particular ISO set, the camera will still pick the correct shutter speed even if it's not displaying it to you on the back of the camera.
