The problem is, Canon doesn't have a very reliable IS mechanism. Just look at their 17-55IS lens. They all fail within 3 years of use.
Which is sweet deal for Canon since their warranty is only 1 year. They should've recalled the lens after all the claims started to come in.
I guess I'm unaware of 17-55 mass failures. Regardless, you specify one single lens...what about the other dozen or so lenses with IS systems? Does that make them all failure-prone?
I think that in the spirit of irony they'll announce a totally new product line consisting of bluetooth creativity chips! You attach the receptacle to your temple and wirelessly transfer images to you printer via direct print thought button. No photoshop needed either, as your imagination does all the editing! A whole zoom lens line is already available by using binoculars, telescopes, etc. The sky's the limit with Dream Image. The newest technology by Canon!
My guess is they want a new 1d for the olympics, Feb 2010, so they would need to announce it soon. I also think, the 50D has never been as hot as they had hoped (it and the d60 are the only xxD bodies I've skipped). They still need something to compete more head to head with the d300, and with the d300s version, they need video in thier mid-level body, due to market requirements.
Well if we are guessing before the deadline, I would go for the Macro 180L with the new IS. 2nd guess is a 200/2.8 with IS and finally, the 1D mark IV or 3n.

my guess would be a 1-2-3 punch of predictability: a macro lens with new hybrid IS, 50Dn w/ video (pinch me), a 1D4 announcement (actually great, because i want a new 1D3).
not quite midnight in london, so possibly there could be a midnight DPR disclosure (as happens sometimes).

You know what Canon's going to do? A FF 16mp 5d size body with pro AF and NO video. Then all the people who bought the 5d2 will buy the 7d, too. They won't be mad, because there's no video, so it doesn't obsolete their previous purchases. It'll still probably sync @ 1/160th w/ pocket wizards.

don't really care about new cams... im set with my 5D but as a guess I think the new IS tech is going to be seen in a 70-200/2.8 IS MKII... Nikon just put out an update to theirs, its a sports lens and it the weakest link in the 70-200mm line up that Canon's currently got. Just make sense to me. Other than that, I wish they would put out something like a 500/5.6 or 600/5.6 but Im pretty sure Im just waisting my breath.... seem like Canon is in a somewhat complacent rut... just hope they pull themselves out of it soon or Sony (and Zeiss AF glass) is going to start looking better and better

I'd buy that.
And so would I- you know what, if Canon does that, that would be a brilliant move and a slap in the face to Nikon's D700. And honestly, if they release such a camera, I wouldn't be surprised if it has video as well. Simply put, with live-view, and the current processor technology, the implementation of video is no skin off Canon's back. In fact amortizing the cost of the video would in fact be a benefit to Canon, not to mention the benefit from boasting an added feature vs the D700.
As long as the AF is dependable and at least that of the 1d mark II series, that would for sure slow down the migration of users to Nikon. What I never understood was Canon's aversion to cannibalism. They should know very well that the scenario of a buyer not buying a 1d mark III and buying an EOS-3D is always preferable to a customer not buying a 1d mark III and buying a D700 instead.

Announcing and releasing are very different. You can expect an announcement for the 1DMIV well before it is released. The marketing push for that camera will be very heavy in an attempt to overcome negative perceptions of the 1DIII.

It shows that you are not familiar with the Nikon lens lineup . Their current 70-200mm f/2.8VR was designed with the DX (crop camera) bodies in mind. As such, it vignettes quite a bit and soft in the corners on their FX bodies. Canon's on the other hand is quite a bit better than the Nikkor counterpart in that respect. Nikon's new and updated version since it is designed from the ground up to work on Nikon FF bodies will be indeed a great lens. However, the point I am trying to get across is: among existing Canon lenses, the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS would be fairly low on the priority list of lenses that need upgrading.

The Canon 70-200/2.8 IS absolutely puts the older Nikon version to shame, at least in the FF corners. There is no reason to update an already competent lens- especially since the new Nikon one is priced out of the price point that the 70-200 IS currently occupies.
