p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · has anyone shaved their 5D2 mirror?

Someday, I want this camera. I took the liberty of shaving my current 5D. Anyone shave the mark II yet? Would there be any issues that aren't found with the mark I? I purchased my 5D used and if I can summon up the cash for the mark II, it would most likely be used.

Thoughts?

I shaved mine, it's easy, and possibly safer than the mkI since the mirror is held down by metal tabs instead of just glue.

p.1 #4 · p.1 #4 · has anyone shaved their 5D2 mirror?

I know there is a thread someplace here on mirror grinding, but since the subject has surfaced, what method is used? As I have revealed before, my efforts were a disaster. I had the 5D mirror that was prone to coming loose, and Canon had a service note for replacement. But, in addition to the mirror falling out, the fact that I ground the mirror on several occasions, taking a little more off each time, an incredible amount of dust built up in the mirrorbox. Now, that I have a nice clean new mirror assembly, I'm reluctant to give it another try. Problem is, I've got these 2 FD L lenses I can't use.

My thought if I were to try again, is to do the procedure just one time to limit the dust problem, so taking off enough the first time is important. I had figured a little over 2mm off the leading edge to clear the FD L lenses.

Does the above sound about right? and what procedure for masking off the area? What tools for a straight edge? The edge of my mirror splintered easily. Any methods other than grinding with a diamond dremel?

Jim,

I used green painters masking tape to mask off the entire area, leaving only the edge of the mirror exposed (held in an ideal position for grinding by the masking tape itself).

I spent about 3x as much time doing the masking as I did with the grinding, and I ran a vacuum very close to the mouth of the camera to suck as much dust as possible.

The grinding was done with a cheap grinding stone that I picked up at a hardware store. Mounted it on my cordless drill and did the grinding at 750 rpm, always keeping the torque directed parallel with the edge (not across the edge). I had no issues with splintering or chipping of the mirror edge, and I used the line of masking tape on the mirror as a guide, to keep things relatively straight.

I also found that it really helped to have a few drinks beforehand

I used a dremel, and yes as Paul says, don't try anything fancy just grind with the torque parallel to the edge, not pulling the mirror up or down.

I can see the cut edge through the viewfinder with my 100mm macro, but not with my 180mm or any other lens.
