My first post in in 5 or 6 years and my first entry ever in WA.
Almost didn't do it in view of the current entries, but decided "what the heck".

Biggest challenge each week (besides finding the time to enter) is finding the guts to enter. But as you enter you'll discover through the supportive comments and the competition you'll become more creative and better at your craft.

The shot works well, good DoF and composition. Keep submitting.

Thanks Chad for the encouraging words.

I have time, just not a lot of guts.

Very good entry and the subject line makes it double appropriate.

Just a thought. Why not show both tips?

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Nice idea, I like it. I agree with Yakim, it would have been nice to see both tips. Good luck this week.

Yakim,

My original idea for this assignment didn't even include a pencil, though it was closely related.

I didn't like where that was going so I added a pencil, then another, then another, but that was too many pencils, so I opted for 2. I tried many shots of those two pencils with points. I even tried one broken, one sharp. Tried a broken point included in the shot, like it broke while writing, but soon discovered that broken pencil points never stay on the page, and rarely stay in the same room. So I thought that looked a little fakish or something.

So I went back to two points, and then I fixated on the word GRAPHITE and decided that I wanted that word in the shot, in focus, and the only way I could figure out how to do that was have it all in the same plane. And then the composition I liked was...and on...and on...

So Yakim and artflake, the short answer to Yakim's question is "the second point just wouldn't fit in the frame".

Thanks Yakim and artflake and Norm for your comments. Very encouraging to me.

that explains it then, I know the frustration, I went through much the same thing with this week's assignment. Always fun to hear the back story too.

And to think lonr, look at all you have learned on your first WA shot. That's what this is all about. Well done! A big welcome to the WA and watch that white balance my friend.

I Look forward to your next entry.

Mike

Message received.

The problem with white balance popped into my head several times. I ignored it. In the end I guess what I did was "settle". That brings up a couple of serious faults of mine. I am a perfectionist and I am lazy. If I had succumbed to the perfectionist in me I would have never posted. On the other hand...well, I tend to go from one extreme to the other.

This forum could turn out be very therapeutic.

Thank you for commenting.

lonr... I watched these WAs for a long time.
There are so many talented and creative shooters here that I was very intimidatad.

When a topic finally spoke to me and I felt I had a decent image, I got brave enough to enter. I received really helpful feedback and it bolstered my confidence.

I've learned a lot and you will too. Keep working at it.

BTW, I like your image. For what it's worth, I might have shot the pencil point so that the shaved head of the other pencil fdidn't sho. If it was all yellow paint, then we might not feel that the image got cut short.

Believe it or not I thought about that, but by that time I was too locked in on the overall composition. If only that pencil were a little longer...

Thanks for the comments and sharing your thoughts.

Lon, don't ever worry about entering. I've only been here a couple of weeks and everyone in the WA has been very helpful and kind.

Be bold. Put it out there. Some will suck, some will be great.

I will agree with tinamarie52:

I like that philosophy. Maybe I can somehow adopt it. I appreciate your encouragement.
