I've been looking into getting me a hand gun. This is really making me want to now. Any suggestions?

Sure, Steve, if you tell me how you like the photo first!

This is a Beretta .380. It is fun to shoot, very accurate at close range, and doesn't have a lot of kick. I'm told, though that for self-defense, you probably want something bigger like a 9 mm or a .45. Tarus, Glock, Sig Sauer, Baretta all make good weapons in those calibers. I'm sure, though, at close range this little weapon would stop a bad guy, too. The idea, though, is to stop the bad guy before he gets too close.

Guns and ammo are all going at premium prices right now, due to fears that this new administration will find a way to circumvent the 2nd Amendment and divest the citizenry of their weapons. I don't know if that is possible or not - at least not without a substantial congressional fight. We certainly live in interesting times.

Mike knows about such things, too, so he might have some good suggestions.

All the best,

Endre

I like the "shot". Very cute idea.

Steve, if you want to get a handgun you first have to decide what you are going to use it for and where you will use it. For personal defense you want nothing smaller than a .40 cal weapon. And with a .40 cal you will want to use the heavier loads.

Actually the higher the caliber the better for stopping a bad guy but you have to consider where it will be fired. The really big bore handguns are not appropriate for use where the round could pass through walls and hurt an innocent victim.

Finally, if you are not acustomed to using a gun you should go to the nearest range that offers a course in the safe use of one. They are NOT toys to be played with.

The trade off between a revolver and an auto is that the auto can jam easier than a revolver so if you choose an auto you must buy a good quality one and good quality ammo. A revolver, while mechanically more dependable, will hold less rounds. A typical loaded clip for an auto is at least 10 rounds whereas a revolver can be limited to 5 0r 6 rounds. So if you want to be sure you won't run out of ammo in the heat of the moment before you actually hit the bad guy an auto is a must.

Endre my dear friend, your "execution" always amazes me. Seriously Thank you!

Hey Steve, I would agree Endre and Yogi pretty much covered it all and some very good advice. You could always make sure the bad guy wouldn't get up and go with the Desert Eagle .50 cal. , but depending on the ammo, you might be patching your neighbors walls. but seriously, be smart and research what is best for you situation. Be safe.

Whoa - did a double-take on this one, it looks just like my Browning 380.

Steve - what do you want a gun for? Target shooting? Home defense? Personal carry? Hunting?

Some good additional points there. There are some pretty wicked powerful handguns for hunting and if you just want to plink at a target a .22 cal is cheaper to shoot.

Size and power are considerations for concealed carry but you need a permit in most states and some won't allow it anyway. They make some nice "pocket rockets" for concealed carry. The considerations are a single stack clip which keeps the gun slimmer but limits the number of shots. Barrel length should be short but then you need to be closer to the target for accuracy. In Ga. I can openly carry a loaded pair of .45's as long as I don't conceal them or make any threatening gestures or statements that are not warranted by the situation; ie a robbery.

For serious competetive target shooting be prepared to shell out some big bucks for both the gun and the ammo.

Another MUST for personal protection in close quarters is a laser sight. Even a seasoned gun user can panic and miss in a confrontational situation but with the laser sight the shot follows the dot.

It's an easy mistake - they look VERY similar. The Browning is a real treat to shoot though. Speaking of which, I'm not sure on this, but is it ok to show the serial number of a gun?

And I didn't say this earlier, but great lighting. It's hard to get that metallic blue just right.

Thanks for making me feel better. It is, indeed, fun to shoot this little guy. Very accurate, too!

I don't know about rules like that. Can't show the serial number of the gun? Why not? Are they going to arrest me? Yikes!! Like the Government isn't intrusive enough? Every detail has to be controlled by the anointed who are inherently wiser and smarter than us poor benighted slobs who make up the masses.

Glad you like the way I lit this. The sun is a great lighting assistant when one know how to use it.

All the best,

Endre

The hard lines of a deadly weapon contrast strangely with the innocent bloom. Reminds me of an old news pic when anti war protesters placed flowers down the rifle barrels of National Guardsmen (?). I haven't touched one of these since I gave up mortal combat many years ago. Life's a lot more peaceful now.

Anyway, this is a fine example for the WA.

Thanks, Bill. Glad you like it.

That was the famous old photo of the Hippie girl taunting the National Guardsmen at the Kent State anti-Vietnam War protest. Where do you think I got the idea? Sadly, due to the Human Condition, flowers don't bring Peace anywhere near as often as deadly weapons do.

What kind of mortal combat were you involved in?

All the best,

Endre

Now if only you had used an actual Colt!

Cool image.

As for the best gun...the best gun to have is the one you have on you. Handle and fire as many as possible before purchasing. Don't buy a gun on looks. Once you get a firearm, pay for a pistol defense course. One that has you fire hundreds of rounds, not sit and listen all day long. Then TRAIN, TRAIN, TRAIN.
