Oh yes, another which lens discusion. I need to hire and low light lens for a wedding i'm doing at the end of the month, venure is very very dark and i suspect i can't use flash (won't know for deff until 2 days prior to the day,, doh!). On my 5d i will have my 85 1.8 and i'm looking for a lens for my 50d, and i'm trying to decide between a 24L f1.4 or 35L f1.4?

I think the 35L on my 50d might be a bit to simular to the 85mm, but i'm concerened of the destortion on the 24L.

Can anyone please enlighten me so i can make a decision.

Cheers
Mark

I've never owned a 50D (so that might be the source of the confusion), but can you explain what you mean by this?

No worries, i'll have the 85 1.8 on my 5d which is ff and the 50d will have either the 24L or 35L, the 50d is a 1.6crop do witht he 35mm on the 50d it will be a equilevent of 56mm on a full frame, and wondering if that would give a noticeable difference of perspective compared to the 85mm.

hope this makes sence, sometimes i can be a clear as mud

On another note did you hear about the earthquake in NZ this week, 6.1.

Both the 35L and the 24L work well on a crop cam. As with any lens decision, your first deciding factor should be the focal length needed for the job. Btw, you get perspective distortion from being too close to your subject, not from using a particular focal length.

I used the 24L extensively on a 40D for environmental portraits and half/full body shots. In combination with a 5D/85mm, I would go for the 24L on a crop body to complement. See if you can rent the mkII. I felt my 24L mkI required stopping down to f/1.8 for critical sharpness on a high pixel density body - not so on the 5D.

The difference between 35mm and 85mm is large, specifically when used on the same body. As for distortion, you won't see any in conjunction with an APS-C sensor and given some working distance very little on FF. For groups and wider shots you may need to use a flash in low light anyway so it would be helpful to know what other lenses you own atm. If you don't own any, aside for the 85mm, the more logical choice of the two is the 24, but I'd suggest getting an f/2.8 zoom, either the 17-55 or the 24-70. If you don't have a flash I'd recommend picking one up along with a sto-fen and a joe demb flip-it--I think you'll need it.

No, that makes sense now I re-read your OP - for some reason I spaced the first part of the second sentence. I would still go with the 35L, though I bet you'll find it spends more time on your 5D.

No, I haven't heard much about the earthquake (off to "stuff" now) thanks - the use of the "no worries" had me wondering!
cheers!

I really like the 35L on my 40D. The various combinations of the 35 + 85 and 50d/5D give you a lot of flexibility (i.e., if you need a wider view put the 35 on the 5D and the 85 on the 50D).

Thanks all for the replys, i think i'm going to go for the 24 as i do need something wider as well, the low light issue is only at the ceromony, for the group shots there is some nice open shade outside so i don't have a issue there.

+1

Don't think "only" of 35 ou 24 on your 50D, but also of mixing bodies and lenses. When you put the 35 on your 5D, effectively you get the same FL as a 24 on your 50D. So by reting the 35 you will have a full coverage of 4 focal lengths.

Whereas, if you rent the 24, you also get 4 FLs, but with something of a gap between 24 on crop a.k.a. 37, and your 85 on 5D. That gap straddles what is generally the most used FL...

Besides which, if you have never used a 24 on FF, you might have something of a learning curve ahead of you before you can get the utmost out of it, and a dimly-lit wedding might not be the best opportunity for trial and error.

Just my 2 cents. YMMV

In general, the advice to consider the ability to mix and match between bodies as it provides a lot of flexibility is sound. However, I cannot imagine you having time to fool around with lens and body changes during the ceremony which makes this approach questionable for your particular situation.

You may get additional input in the wedding forum. But from my PoV you are well covered with a ~35mm and 85mm FF equivalent focal length. 85mm and a ~50mm equivalent are just too close together IMO.

Out of curiosity, why use the wider lens on a crop body? Wouldn't it be better to use a longer short lens on a FF body and shorter long lens on the crop?
