I'd pass. If you want to get a 1D3, I'd get one that's in better condition (no brassing), has a low and verifiable shutter count, is in a higher SN range, has been sent to Canon for any and all fixes, and if possible has an extended warranty.

1d3s are not hard to come by and there's no reason to jump on something like this. Canon will continue selling more if they're in stock (most of us hope production has been stopped). There's no rush to buy a beater IMO...

I personally wouldn't risk not having a backup body in my bag. If you end up replacing your 50D, you effectively increased the cost of this deal by nearly $1000. The only other thing I'd note is that your dealer may still be making money on this 'deal'; there's really no way to know, and I'd doubt there's a huge market for a well-worn 1D MkIII if it weren't really, really cheap.

Just a thought.

PS: Perhaps, however, a well-worn MkIII is testament to the fact that it works? I can't say, I've never actually seen a well-worn MkIII...

Mine was purchased new in September of 2008 for $ 4,300 and I'd be surprised if I could get $2,000.00 for it seeing that it has a high shutter and the focus is still not 100% after the latest fix.

Much success,

Once again,
Thanks for all of your suggestions. Since I do 95% of my work at base ISO (iso 100) and flying birds are not my thing, I have decided to hold tight w/ my current gear. The 50D pairs well w/ my 300 f2.8, as that is one of the few lenses that can resolve that level of pixel detail.

The 5D continues to hold its own w/ most current bodies, and represents a practical resolution for landscape work up to 30 inches.

I'm off to the badlands on Saturday... it will be an opportunity to think about photography instead of gear!
cheers,
bruce

p.s. I would immediately discard any "you know why it's on that shelf" rationale.

I saw a Jaguar XJ220 in the shop last week. Must be crap!

I think the "Jaguar" badge is more of a clue than it being in the shop. Although to be fair, quality allegedly improved under Ford ownership.

Totally OT, but I noticed that Jaguar recently topped a poll of most reliable autos!

If you don't need a second body, then yeah, the 1DMKIII will give you the best of both worlds, not to mention weather sealing which may come in handy for your type of shooting.

Just a better camera than both the bodies you have...period.

I think that's a fair trade. I don't think it's a fantastic trade, but a decent one since you can find used 1DMKIII's for a little more than that.

Make sure the paperwork is solid. Any recall work done? Warranty terms? Etc.

If it was me, I'd do it. As many mention, the $350 is not much and in a few months you'll forget the you even spent it.

In fact, I'm willing to trade my 1DMKII + 5D for a 1DMKIII if someone offers me an opportunity.

As the focus is fine and as the store has a 100% return policy (should more rigorous tests will prove otherwise) I'd go for it.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.
