I'm very skeptical about 4:1...need some real data before I assume that to be anything like true. I have several friends, two in thier 20s, that recently asked me about cameras...all of them bought Canon. I would not conclude from this that Canon out sells Nikon 2:0 in the 20-something age category. Also at a class I took at a local community college, more "kids" had Canon than Nikon...but that sample is so small that I can't conclude anything from that either. The instructor shoots Canon so maybe that is why, maybe the college has a deal with Canon for the full time people...I dunno.
My daughter is in the Art School at VCU. She is not studying photography but some of her friends are. In that crowd, those kids don't seem to care a bit about what brand the camera is...they don't care about anything other than what works to get a decent grade...just so long as it works...they are into composition, not gear. I will say tho that they do seem to like Macs quite a bit and while the school does not says Macs are required...when you ask them, that is what they say...and the whole place is Mac based. It would be interesting to know if the school recommends a camera brand to photography majors but doubtful...will let you know if I ever find out. I would doubt it tho...the brands are all so close these days and parents may have already bought or the other when the kind was in HS.
Anyway, anecdotal evidence drives me nuts...maybe enough to buy Nikon...maybe.
BTW, there is some public market data about camera sales somewhere out there...someone posted a link last year, maybe someone can chime in with a link.
