this might be a kind of odd question but im just kinda curious. i think amongst the younger age range right now, whether theyre looking into buying a DSLR or are already shooting with one, the pick tends to be nikon over canon.

id say the ratio is maybe 4 to 1. any speculation as to the reasoning behind that? is it opposite where youre from?

My speculation on your speculation is that there's no real reason to speculate since choosing a tool for a task when there's a diverse assortment available is entirely a personal thing. But you could go ask the first timers in the Nikon forum why they choose Nikon over Canon.

Do you really think the ratio is that high? Nikon does make good cameras but Canon does too and the glass for Canon is better with a few exceptions. I will admit though that Nikon seems to offering their entry level models in alot of the big discounters so that may play a role in it. If all your going to buy is a cheap DSLR with a kit lens and never buy another lens then I can see how Nikon might get alot of those people.

Where did you get that 4 to 1 from?

I say let more people buy Nikon so Canon will improve their products and/or price them lower.

yeah david i think its that high. the 4 to 1 is amongst my peers or friends of friends. for every one person shooting with a canon or thinking about purchasing a canon, theres maybe 4 who are shooting with a nikon or are telling me theyre in the market to buy a nikon.

to each their own and it doesnt really matter to me. its a silly question i know, but really as a canon user its just bugging me a little bit.

the whole canon vs nikon thing is just a mind f*ck, keeping us from doing what we should: take great pictures, no matter what equipment you use.

Nikon has made some pretty blatant targeted marketing efforts in the recent past with the intention of capturing the younger market - nothing wrong with that of course...

Younger people tend to be obsessed with numbers and the bandwagon effect. More experienced people are interested in the outcome. That is nothing new and applies in so many areas, not just photo gear.

I think Nikon's marketing has been more catchy lately, and they have always had
a very good reputation back the film days. With their newer bodies, their digital
system is excellent.

I expect that with no big downside to their products and some good marketing, the
hip crowd is signing on.

On balance, I still favor the Canon side, but really both systems are very good.
Marketing is probably the scale tipper these days.

The more bells, whistles and shiny stuff the more appealing the gadget - good point.

Think about Nikon's marketing. Right now the person you see respresenting their products is Ashton Kutcher. I'd say I see 4 Nikon commercials for every Canon commercial that comes on. The only Canon commercial I can recall seeing in some time is for the 500D. I'm with a couple others and say take some great pictures whatever equipment you use. I chose Canon as this is what my father was looking at getting and I'd be able to borrow L series glass from a friend.

edit: beat me to it alan

He is a photographer? Or is it like that tennis player (who later shaved his head) promoting the EOS Rebel in the 90s.

I'm very skeptical about 4:1...need some real data before I assume that to be anything like true. I have several friends, two in thier 20s, that recently asked me about cameras...all of them bought Canon. I would not conclude from this that Canon out sells Nikon 2:0 in the 20-something age category. Also at a class I took at a local community college, more "kids" had Canon than Nikon...but that sample is so small that I can't conclude anything from that either. The instructor shoots Canon so maybe that is why, maybe the college has a deal with Canon for the full time people...I dunno.

My daughter is in the Art School at VCU. She is not studying photography but some of her friends are. In that crowd, those kids don't seem to care a bit about what brand the camera is...they don't care about anything other than what works to get a decent grade...just so long as it works...they are into composition, not gear. I will say tho that they do seem to like Macs quite a bit and while the school does not says Macs are required...when you ask them, that is what they say...and the whole place is Mac based. It would be interesting to know if the school recommends a camera brand to photography majors but doubtful...will let you know if I ever find out. I would doubt it tho...the brands are all so close these days and parents may have already bought or the other when the kind was in HS.

Anyway, anecdotal evidence drives me nuts...maybe enough to buy Nikon...maybe.

BTW, there is some public market data about camera sales somewhere out there...someone posted a link last year, maybe someone can chime in with a link.

Canon went after the mom category (check out the mom running the sideline obstacles with an XSi) with dSLRs.

Canon also uses Maria Sharapova for the P&S market segment.

Maybe it's just me, but Canon vs Nikon seems a bit like PC vs Mac, Canon seems a bit techy and nerdy, Nikon seems to be what da kool kidz buy.
