I had an off-line request for info on how I set this up and how it was processed, and I'm happy to share that.
With the 180mm L Macro lens mounting ring on the tripod, the ball head was tilted such that the lens pointed straight down. I composed the shot through the viewfinder with the camera oriented upside down (something that I sometimes do when trying to manually focus, as it helps accomodate my trifocal glasses and my large nose ) With the shutter release cord in my right hand, I held the undiffused 580EX on off-camera cord in my left hand almost parallel to the surface of the feather and only a few inches off-camera. I wanted the harsh light in order to bring out the pattern of the feather in base-relief, and to enhance the magnification of the droplets.
My processing workflow is to load the RAW image wth Adobe Camera Raw, and for my L lenses my defaults are very close to as-taken. The first photoshop step is always Noise Ninja, using the supplied profile for the camera and for the ISO used. For the 180 L Macro, the effect of Noise Ninja is very subtle - to my eye it gives the image a slight sharpening. The second step is always levels adjustment - in this case only to close a gap on the left of the histogram. Third, because the highlights had a slight sepia cast that I found distracting, I chose to desaturate the image. The final step was back to levels for a slight increase in contrast. No sharpening was applied to this image, either before or after resizing. Oh, and I also rotated the image to appear as I saw it while composing the shot.

Worth the effort Cal and yes it is interesting. Thanks.
