Anyone else disagree with this? I use both lenses on a 1DMk3 and almost always have a x1.4TC on the 500mm but would say that the latter is decidedly faster at AF.
Colin
Colin,
It is very close (both the 100-400mm and 500mm + 1.4xTC are F5.6 lenses). The difference depends on the setting of the focus limiting switch and the difference between the starting and ending point of focus. Since the 500mm is more likely to have to travel farther, it is more likely to be slightly slower. The difference is almost non-existant. I guess that was my point. The 100-400mm is quite fast and almost identical to any F5.6 combo I have used.

Jim, you get me close enough in your boat to them birds, and I'll show you how an old 80-200L zoom can kick those fat 500 f/4 and 100-400 a$$es.
Just let me know when you are ready. I'll get you as close as you want to be. The rest of what you mentioned is easier said than done. We'll see. So far my fat old 500F4 is undefeated.
Some more old PIF shots with 100-400. Please note from the standpoint of camera AF the #1 and #2 were easy. The #3 was a bit harder. That's why I only managed to establish focus on the bird as it was landing.
These bird shots are outstanding. I've used (rented) the 300mm f2.8 before on my 40D, but I can't picture the extra 100mm helping that much unless you were relatively close already? Or have these been cropped pretty tight?
I'mm wondering because you get to infinity pretty quick on the focus ring, and if you are that far away, is there any need to worry about changing focus? Leave it at max and shoot? Sorry if this comes across as a real newb question.

Nice pigeon shots. You are just kidding around about your challenge aren't you?
Jim, only half kidding.
In my old days I have developed a bit of a perverse sense of funny.
Last winter a group of guys were shooting ducks in flight by the lake......Long tails, Buffle Heads, Mallards etc.
All of them had some sort of long telephoto lenses, mostly white.
Then I joined them with my 20D + EF-S 60mm f/2.8 macro. As I started firing away earnestly, never chimping even once, I could swear I was making the other guys nervous.
I still get other photogs that walk up to me and very seriously tell me that I can't possibly get sharp images hand holding the 500mm. They really think I'm nuts when I put on the 2x.

1000mm handheld ain't an easy feat even with IS.
Three more 100-400 PIFs.
(Damn, after this pijun-fest I'll never be able to bag again the 100-400 for its sluggish AF )

Does this qualify? I (with my vehicle + gear) was about to cross the mighty Cagayan river on a birding sortie, and the makeshift barge was steaming towards me at full speed (perhaps at 100 miles per day).

Anders, I am moved by your poetry.
Mind you, some of the pijuns have gone to Studio 35 where we shoot PIFs with EF 35L. Here is a sample.
