Thanks for the amazing dance shots timbop and joez.
I usually shoot flamenco dance, I've done some in bigger halls with a large stage and decent lighting, to smaller venues like a restaurant or small hall. I usually resign to shooting my 30D on ISO 1600 which isn't so bad if there's not alot of black space, but the noise is high in the shadows, especially on the faces. It gets me the images so that's what I care about, but the 5D II looks like it's going to be much better than what I have now. A usable ISO 3200 and a cleaner 1600 would be worlds ahead for me.
How was the 85 1.2 focus for those dance shots joez. I'm eyeing the 135 f2.
I live in Japan right now, with plans to head back home to the states in a year or so. I'll get a pension kick back for paying in for the 3 or 4 years I'm here, and I'm hoping to spend that 5-7000 US on the new 1D body and maybe put the rest towards a 300 2.8
Robert is demonstrating a perfect example of noise at high ISO : It all comes down to proper exposure of the photos.
The guys up there with the dance performance and fashion show have very difficult lighting situations ( Red floodlights, High contrast situations) . Noise level will be quite apparent even for a FF camera.
the 85 F/1.2L II is ok in terms of AF on a 1D-type body, but on my 20D it's a bit tricky. I find that the depth of field is so narrow, you have to *really* pay attention to what you are focusing on. It takes a bit of practice to get things right...
the 85L's focus isn't really 'slow' - it is 'precise' - like riding your mountain bike in first gear... whereas the 135L moves quicker because there is less turning of the focus ring...
