p.4 #1 · happypagehk vs Big_is adapters

Yes it is a fair offer, unless you've bought more than one of course

Progress is a good thing, but you might expect this to fall under a faulty first batch.

I was tempted to send in a request, but getting just a chip is the easy part, replacing the original is the hard part.

Also the old non programming one works on both my 5D and 1D3, the new chip doesn't. That fact alone makes the old chip an interesting proposition,

Perhaps someone can answer a question of mine.

The first batch of BiG IS Pentax K to EOS with programmable chip puts the lens index in the 10 o'clock position (pov through the viewfinder), which is undocumented and IMHO pretty annoying. I don't think this is a common feature on all Pentax K adapters, but I could be wrong. This might have been done by design (to create more clearance for the mirror) or simply by mistake (there is a "dot" glued in that position, marking who knows what in technical terms).

If the older non-programmable Pentax K adaptor doesn't share this feature I am tempted to replace the newer design.

anyone has any thoughts on the new one-piece adapters that big_is currently stocks?

as compared to the old two-piece one:

I will definitely choose the newer chip, and make sure it comes with 2nd version of firmware they just announced. The old chip or new chip old firmware does not have focus micro-adjustment so you cannot "fix" your focus shift in case it happens, which is quite common you know...

Sorry to be off-topic. There are in fact three different AF-chips claiming microadjustment on focus. One from Bigis, one from Happypagehk and one called Euro-chip. I got all three AF-chips from them, but my Bigis chip is of older firmware.

Euro-chip was the first to release such programmable product and features an AutoFocus mode AF-assist function. Unfortunately this AutoFocus mode proves to be the killer of their product. You might not be able to enter the programming mode after playing with the camera for a few hours!

Bigis releases their programmable chips through 200 pcs giveaway trials. I got mine then and well... I must say for a free chip it is good enough, and much better than the Euro-Chip. At least you succeed in programming it following the instructions after only some trial and error. Old firmware does not support many of the cameras out there and they just announced the 2nd trial version (same as the one sold on ebay now). Heard that most canon cameras are supported now! Maybe you should write them and get one free?

I'm thinking of picking up a couple of adapters for my old contax lenses (35-70; 85f1.4/100f3.5; 28f2.8/25f2.8) along with a 5dmkii.

Two quick questions: I see several of you experimented with both happy and big-is adapters back in July. Can you provide an update on preference between the two (if you have one?).

Also what/which focus screen is useful in 5dmkii for manual focus ?

I have the older standard AF confirm adapters from
BIG_IS and I am having trouble with the Nikon F to EF
on the 5D.

I cannot seem to get accurate focus with it, I used a tripod
to keep the setup fixed and tried to focus on a stationery
object and every time resulted in a different focus . . .
very annoying. I also have the OM to EF and that seems fine
of not as bad ??

I havnt used the lenses and adapter on thhe 5D for a while
but dont remember it being this difficult to achieve focus.

I was using a Nikkor-S 50mm f1.4 [not stellar but I had great results
before]

Is it a user problem ?

I have mailed SU bout this, but just thought I would post here too.

A couple of months ago, I bought an adapter from Rudolph at HappyPage (non teflon finish) and the fit was a little bit sloppy ( chipped Leica to EOS).
I complained to Rudolph and he promised to send me a new one when he got his next batch. Well it's been 2 months and I have sent him multiple e-mails and I have never received the improved replacement that he promised me, nor has he responded to e-mails.
Can't say that I'm impressed. I would buy from someone else that makes a better product and keeps their word.

So all of these eBay adapters are crapshot?

I ordered one from a seller cam.plus. It is shipped about 2 weeks after order. The adapter is too thin and lenses would focus past infinity. The chip is faulty too. I contacted the seller and I am ignored. I initiated a paypal dispute case, I wish that they would still ignore me totally, because if so the case would be decided in my favour. Instead they respond just enough to try to stall for as long as they could, they received my returned adapter and just sit on it. I only managed to wrestle the claim back by providing the shipping tracking result. Stay away from them!

Now I'm going to give it another shot. But from the photos it seems that everyone is selling the same thing, including the cheaper Fotodiox. The latest chipped big_is looks different, and looks the same as the one I got from a local shop, which I have no complaint. I wish that I don't have to go for the pro model from Fotodiox as they cost more than the lens themselves.

Does anyone know anything about this "Euro-Chip"? This is the one from Minsk or Lithiuania (not sure which). See: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270449236364&ssPageName=STRK:MEBOFFX:IT
It does look interesting. Is the criticism above accurate? I was thinking of giving it a try.

Out of the adapters I have I think the happypage adapters seem to be the best( latest V5). To be perfectly honest with you I find that(even hand held) live view is the way to go. If I use live view with lets say my 100 3.5 it returns images as good as anything I`ve ever used around those focal lengths(inc the famed Leica stuff)
My Contax 85 1.4 is another story, it shows focus shift from focussing wide open to stopping down to the shooting apertrue.
Lenses I use with Happypage adapters that give good results.
Contax 21 2.8
" 25 2.8
" 28 2.8
Voigtlander 40 f2
Contax 100 3.5

Hope it helps

No problem here, I was able to alter all the settings stated in the manual.

Hi everyone.

I have bought an adapter from e-bay seller called shamino123, it was cheaper then happypageHK adapter, but on pictures it looks the same, and it suppose to uses the same optix V5 chip. Setting of aperture is the same, and it focuses OK. I'm very happy with it, BUT I have found one weakness - when setting my canon EOS 5D to continuous shooting, I get different metering results for pictures in burst. For example: I go to AV mode, set F8 on lens, and shutter speed calculated is 1/250. Then I press the shutter and hold. I get 5 photos 1/250, but then suddenly 2 or 3 photos 1/60 - eg a lot slower, and of course over-exposed. As I shoot mostly in manual mode, I don't really care, but I wanted to know if I do something wrong, or is it a bug, or maybe a feature ;-) of optix V5

I have set the aperture of chip to 3.5 because I use it with zeiss VS 35-70mm F3.4

I just bought a 2;nd hand Leica R Canon emf adapter along with a Summicron.R 35/2. I can't make the adapter to take commands. It seems stuck on 2,8 / 90mm. Nothing happens. Is there a way to verify that the adapter works. I do get AF confirmation. There is none whatsoever marking on the actual adapter for id :-/ but it came eith a "emf" printed manual which says that micro-adjust is present to program.

In the manual there is one statement that puzzles me: after entering program mode i.e.:
....
"4. Turn the aperture dial and set the aperture value to F/64 and press shutter button once. The operation combination of F/64-shutter button+F57-shutter button +F/64-shutter button will activate the setting mode of the ring.

5. Turn the aperture dial, if the maximum aperture value can be set to F/1.0, your ring is now in setting mode."

it's the step 5 and "Turn the aperture dial, if the maximum aperture value can be set to F/1.0" thats really vierd - I cant interpret what to do!

Someone??

Cheers / Johan

edit: wanted notif!

not sure about the "new" chips, but with the Contax N conurus chip, you can do multiple FL micro adjustment.

http://support.conurus.com/viewtopic.php?t=56

maybe EMF chip can do the same thing?

Johan, to get it into program mode, first put it in Manual exposure mode. Then,
1. Set the aperture to f/64 and fully press the shutter button.
2. Set the aperture to f/57 and fully press the shutter button.
3. Set the aperture to f/64 and fully press the shutter button.
4. Now if you did it correctly, you should be able to set the aperture to any setting.
At this point, for each operation that you want to carry out (max aperture, focal length, micro adjustment), you have to set the aperture for that mode and press the shutter to get it into that mode. Refer to the instructions for each mode. Note that you can only do one mode each time you go into program mode.

After you have performed the operations for that mode, in order to save what you've set:
1. Set the aperture to f/57 and fully press the shutter button.
2. Set the aperture to f/64 and fully press the shutter button.
3. Set the aperture to f/57 and fully press the shutter button.

You have to go through this save or you will lose what you've entered. It's a bit tedious but after you've done it a couple of times, you'll get it.

Does anybody have the problem of overexposure using liveview mode? I just recently purchased a few OM lenses (and big_is adapters) and have found that liveview is completely unreliable. I am afraid I might have programmed the chip incorrectly, or am simply missing something in the shooting 'workflow' I should already know, but have yet to figure out a reliable cure.

Thoughts?

OK, I had to give up on this adapter as it didn't allow for focus on infinity. Thanks for the answer anyway!

I had bad experience with HappyPage. Its Leica to EOS does not fit and the AF chip glue is spilled all over the adapter. It costs $ to return to HongKong too. Definitely no HappyPage for me.

I had to return a Nikon to Canon adapter for a free replacement, but Happypage let me keep the rear lens cap to cover the return postage...fair deal I thought...
