Take 5 N to 118 W to 23 W to 101 to 58 E to 99 to 5 S to 138
you can also take some hwy to get to big bear come down big bear to i15 to 395 to 138
seriously...just go there straight..there isn't much to see till you hit 14...the fastest way is to take 5N to 14 to Ave D and follow directions ..once your done seeing the poppy reserve go behind the poppy reserve or close by areaas...much better flowers. then take 138 W and hit the 5...drive towards Gorman..there is some stuff there..if yu still have time...take 5 N to 166E and go to Carrizo Plains OR keep going on 166 (nice rolling hills, greenry and some WF), hit 101 ...enjoy the sunset at the beach have a nice dinner and go back home
Sunny thanks for the advise I think I am going to do what you recommended, a nice day with the wife and our 6 month old baby should make for a nice day out. Would you recommend a truck or a Honda Accord for this adventure?
I'd suggest from where you are, right up the 5 to the 138 and east. Some of the reports on the area report fields to the northwest, and last year that was what we saw as well although the reserve are was probably pretty much as good as the other spots. Changes over time, of course.. Sometimes the Gorman area, around the intersection of the 5 and 138 is stunning. 605 to 210 then west to the 5 will avoid some of the traffic through downtown, will still be sluggish in areas depending on time of day.
Disadvantages of going up the 5 is the competition with rush hour traffic, otoh, if you leave real early, early enough to get ahead of the worst of it, you might beat some of the winds. Weekend? Less traffic overall, more people at the reserve. Weekday, worse traffic in the L.A. Basin.
There is some scenery of the 138/14 but not necessarily too much, last time we went that way, there were some smaller flower patches. I think if your goal is to get to the reserve, going by way of Carrizo Plain or Big Bear is going to suck up all your time.
i have been scouting locations the last 3 weekends:
Arvin CA area was spectacular the last 2 weekends...not much left unless you hike way up as of yesterday.
Corrizo Plains..lots of yellow bed on the ground and west facing hills
Hwy 58 between Bakersfield and Corrizo..same thing
Hwy 166 not much between 99 to Corrizo Plains.
Gorman ..west facing hills have lots of yellow...thats about it...before you get to Gorman there is beautiful patch of pink flowers...and nothing else.
I plan on using this weekend as a scout weekend I want to go up there on the 25-26 for there annual festival. I know on that weekend it is going to be nuts, but its something I want to check out. Thanks again for your advise I truly appreciate it. I will be posting pictures up on Sunday.
