Hell, I'll jump in. A tough topic, and a tough first entry by Jazno to beat.

It is the middle of Lent, and my daughter is topping up her Trócaire box. Trócaire is the Irish word for charity. C&C welcome.

Beautiful...she's totally enjoying the experience of giving. Great capture!

This brings back memories...I can remember doing this as a child as I am sure many others can as well. Well done!

Lovely pic but the right crop bothers me a bit. I think I'd prefer if your child was in the middle of the frame.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Thank you all for feedback and compliments. I take your point Yakim, and as I had some nice diffuse evening light to work with and my model agreed to a reshoot after negotiating bonuses, I took the shot again a few minutes ago.

Thanks again.

Great idea ! I like it.
To me the shot with the box child face looking at the camera was stronger (relation between the two children). It is IMO what makes the shot.

Thanks Markoner, I see your point also. DOH! as Homer would say. I prefer the light and the composition on the new shot, I like that her face is lifted up a bit more so her eyes are more visible. I can see enough of the box (if the original didn't exist especially) to make the same connection and show the contrast between the box child and my daughter. It's close though!

Thanks for feedback!

I like first better (both are really cute)! Something about the way she is looking at the box does it for me. Either is a winner, just like the first better! Well done.

That sounds awfully familiar.

IMHO the second one is better on the compositional side but a bit less WRT her expression. Sorry to be such a nag. I know it's much easier to criticize than to create. I have yet to take one myself.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

I tend to disagree. To me the first one works much better (for the assignment not for a child portrait of course). The look of the model connects with the box and there the child on the box look at the camera, all that on strong points of the image (thirds). My eyes keep travelling through that connexion that makes me stay longer on the picture. The only thing that bothers me a bit is the light on the box (lack of contrast).

Thank you all for valued feedback. I have decided to stick with original. I tend to agree that the expression sums it up and connections described are better. It is difficult to get everything right, as the expression lasts an instant when she revels in the act of giving, as she is aware of what she is doing, then the expression turns to intense concentration. She also tilts the box to make the job easier. So I'll stick with the original as I think the connection between my daughter and the character on the box, plus the text on the box, is crucial.

For those curious, the following is the re-shoot I toyed with using instead:

Thanks again!

That's exactly the meaning of charity.
Both photos works for me, she's totally into giving.
The 2nd one has a better view of her though.
Yes, good capture and well done.

I'm glad you stuck with the first one. I like the off-centre composition; it makes for a more interesting image. My only nit might be the presence of the upside-down yellow/orange camel(?) on the fabric in the background. It is just a tad distracting.

All the best,
Rich
