ZF 100/2 isn't a true macro lens in the sense that it will do 1:1 macro.

Or try the Leica 100 APO 2.8 with ElPro 1.2:1 converter!
Sharper from the get go, does 1:1, and no CA. See Macro challenge at slrlensreview website.

Hey thats a cool review! Sounds like Leica's the best of the best, the only drawback being the slightly smaller max aperture.

Other drawbacks, some people don't like the extra weight of the Leica and the putting-on/taking-off of the ElPro 1.2:1 converter from the front of the lens depending on how much magnification you need for the shot. For me, those two drawbacks are not a problem and I really like the Leica's IQ but YMMV.

I just noticed this thread and thought I would add that my Sigma 150 is also sharp wide open, certainly comparable to my 135L wide open and that's very good. So I'm surprised at the OP's poor showing.

Probably that famous Sigma quality control at work!

And will do 1:1 as well as, and probably better than, either of these lenses with a simple extension tube. ;-)

Something is fishy here. Sigma is very sharp by default. I usually don't even need to sharpen during PP.

I have the same situation and opinion as the original poster. I bought a Sigma 150mm because I couldn't find a CV 125. I was mildly disappointed, as it wasn't even as sharp as my Canon 50mm F2.5.

Then I found a CV 125mm. It is much sharper than the Sigma!!! Based on seeing this string I sent my Sigma back to have it focus calibrated and checked. I figured that it would be great when it came back. Well...... It's better than it was, but still can't hold a candle to the CV 125mm.

I am now left trying to decide if I should sell the Sigma and buy a Canon 100mm macro, or even go back to the Canon 180mm that I had before the Sigma.

All told.. The CV 125mm lives up to the hype, and is sharper than the Contax 100mm and the Sigma 150mm by quite a bit. The Sigma, does not live up to it's hype. It is a nice lens for the money, but not top optic I was hoping for.

I believe this to be a QC issue, as there really seems to be copy to copy variation with most Sigma lenses, even after calibration. As a previous poster had also said, my 150mm Macro requires no additional sharpening at all. As well it stands up well to the high resolution of the 5D Mark II, which is not too forgiving to lenses especially when viewing at 100%.

I am surprised by your findings, but happy to know that the CV 125 is the best of the 3 lenses you've tried/tested, as I sold my Canon 100 macro as soon as I got the CV 125. It is still very possible that you didn't have a good copy of the Sigma and the recalibration didn't do much good. While I think the Canon 100 macro is very sharp, the CV 125 is at least just as sharp .... has better contrast and color .... and above all, a nicer bokeh.

Just to be clear, When I sent it to Sigma, I asked them to do more than just recalibrate. They had the lens for 3 weeks and sent it to a sub-contratctor in Arizona to be "adjusted".

So are you suggesting that the Sigma is way better than the Canon 100mm?

I have no intention of parting with my CV 125mm. I am just looking for an AF lens to compliment it for "BIF" (bees in flight), where the CV can be a challenge.

I had the Canon 180mm and sold it based on all the great reviews of the Sigma. I also generally get the impression that many feel the Conon 100mm is a little sharper and faster focusing than the 180mm.

Any suggestions?

I don't know about "way better" but I do think that both the Canon 180 and Sigma 150 are a little better than the Canon 100.

If I thought the Canon was better, I would probably have it and not the Sigma, especially since the Canon goes for less. The only other lens I have that is in the same league for wide open sharpness is the EF 135/2L.
