I'm wondering if anyone here would be interested in converting an FL 55mm 1.2 lens to an EF mount and if it would offer infinity focus on a 40D and or a 5D. Thanks.

I have a couple and think they are great. Sharp, nice bokeh, user friendly.

I've got one-- great lens. As good as any of the similar focal length lenses hyped on here. Maybe better:

I thought I was getting infinity on my 5D at f/1.2, but I'm not actually sure anymore. I can definitely get a fake sort of infinity when it's stopped down.

Good question. I doubt it. Probably on some. There is too much DOF (for f1.2) on some of these pictures.

No, these are f/1.4 and f/2.0.

I'm one of those people who thinks you shouldn't shoot at widest aperture just because you can.

<rant>
To me, photographic gear is a means to an end. I can understand that being a gear-based website, many folks here have that equation reversed. That's fine with me (we all have our hobbies), it's just not my primary interest.

I see so many photos that are ruined, on this website, by TOO LITTLE dof. Which is funny to me. We rush to get such fast aperture lenses, only to descend into a kind of generic, totally isolated image that anyone else with a camera and a fast lens can reproduce. I know I've fallen into this trap myself.

Yes, I'm saying that super-fast apertures are a trap that induce crap photography nine times out of ten.

</rant>

The FL 55 f/1.2 is great wide open, but (see rant above) dof is so shallow that in most cases it's pointless. Also, like the Rokkor (or 85L), I think the FL tames itself one or two clicks down. I tend to prefer shooting it around that range, unless I'm specifically looking for the way this draws wide open (with a bunch of glow).

Here's wide open. Don't have 100% crops available right now. Focus is on the fabric of the chair... and it's sharp.

I think this is with the FL too, wide open:

I am with you 100%. I use my 85L a lot but almost never shoot at f1.2!

Having said that, the last b/w image you posted worked really well at f1.2!

Not sure if I wasn't clear, but the photos posted above are from an FL 55/1.2 converted to EOS mount. Taken on a 5D.

I have one sitting here that I love to send to Jim for conversion. But what I like to know first is that if it clears the 5D's un-shaved mirror at infinity or not.

Input?

It doesn't - it needs a mirror shave.

Not on my copy of the 5D II. I think if you tell Jim that you are using this lens on a FF body he will know what to do. My copy was already converted before I got it.

First of all, those flower photos are incredible.

I tried a 12mm extension tube on a 50mm lens and there was a distance gap between the lens @ minimum and lens w/ 12mm ext., so I made this thing with a 9mm thickness:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3463/3380617875_203658c22a_o.jpg
It starts where the 50mm leaves off at closest focus.

As far as the FL 55/1.2 on a 5D is concerned, with the mirror box variation, its a hit or miss proposition, literally. Some have sacrificed infinity for mirror clearance. There are so many variables, I can not take the liability of grinding down someone else's rare rear lens housing, without the matching 5D camera.
