I never use templates to design my pages, otherwise I end up thinking how to fit my images into template. It is so easy to design in fotofusion that I don't use templates.

Thank you,
Oleksandr.

I love InDesign. It's easy to use, stores templates, generates flash books with page flipping, PDFs to share of your album, and is compatible with all Adobe software.

you know what i just saw was on auska's site they ahve their own album design software now. not sure if you have to use it on their books only but it looked cool. but hey even if you have to use it on their stuff and you use their albums a lot it might be worth looking in to.

I'm sorry, but have you used InDesign? I can't imagine trying to use PS.

Never used Aperture as I am not apart of the Steve Jobs cult, but every time I've tried PS I always get really frustrated by how long it took. Indesign is perfect for me. It's fast, easy, built for making layouts, and doesn't restrict me to templates. I used it to design my first kiss album, and it took about 5 hours, but I expect the next one to only take 3 hours tops.

Seriously all the advice here means nothing if you are not a graphic designer. We spend money on great products but put out mediocre designs in albums because we think we can do it ourselves.

The same as people who see photo journalism and figure there is nothing to it so they get a relative to do the photos.

If you are not a graphic designer then for the sake of your clients get a template program.

Template programs are the worst IMHO. You will quickly out grow them. They are limiting. And, you end up spending way to much time looking for the write template. Get a layout program like InDesign. If you want to learn to design an album you don't need an education in graphic design. Some of the worst album designs I have ever seen are from graphic designers. Learn by looking at the WPPI winners designs. Go to http://www.icesociety.com or https://www.theicesociety.com/?page=73 and check out Jerry Ghionis's DVD The X Factor. This guy just one Album of the Year from WPPI for like the 3rd or 4th time. Yea, the DVD is $150 but it's worth every penny. He also reviews albums and album designs on his monthly presentations.

Anyway, InDesign is a piece of cake to learn. It allows you to be inspired and make a template in seconds from anything you see. Heck, I saw a great layout in a Restoration Hardware catalog that came to my mom the other day. I just went home and made it in 10 seconds. It was cool. After you make a template you can store and share it with ease. This program lays out probably 90% of all magazines and print ads. The most important thing to me is the ease of adjustments and the incredible precision of InDesign as well. Oh....when you buy it you get a month of free training at Lynda.com. It took me 1 hour to learn InDesign! After a few hours of playing with it you can be a master.

I use inDesign too and I love how you can just drag and drop images into the little boxes you create. So easy!!
