p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · ZUIKO AUTO-W 24mm Question

Hello,

I am a new zuiko owner and have a question. I just picked up an OLYMPUS OM-SYSTEM ZUIKO AUTO-W 24mm from ebay for ~$100/US. I think this is the multi-coated version (SN# 203442) and looks to be in very good condition overall.

But the thing I don't understand are the metal push buttons and how these are tied to stopping down? So does one really need to hold these buttons down while stopping down? How is this supposed to work? When I turn the aperture ring alone it doesn't appear to do anything. The lenses diaphram only closes when I push the buttons. Is that 'normal' or could my aperture ring control be broken?

Here is a quick snap of what I am talking about if you haven't seen it:

Thanks for any help/guidance you can provide.

Derek

One button is the lens release, the other is the DOF preview. Depressing the DOF preview button is more or less the same as activating the aperture stop-down lever on the rear of the lens. On typical adaptors, a small arm holds the stop-down lever fully actuated at all times, mooting the DOF preview button. Some shooters prefer an adaptor without that arm, and manually depress the DOF preview button just before shooting. This allows them to focus while the lens is wide open, without turning the aperture ring back and forth all the time. On an OM camera, of course, the lens would normally be wide open, and stop automatically for exposure.

Upshot: your lens sounds healthy, though if it doesn't stop down when attached to an adaptor then perhaps you have one of the armless types. At $100 you've probably gotten a great deal.

Thank you for the explanation. As a Zuiko newbie it is a bit confusing. After I read your description I dialed the adapter a little tighter and the small arm pushed further in. All seems to be working as expected now. BTW the adapter's arm is a screw which 'can' be removed.

I appreciate your help,

Derek

Congrats to your new lens.

I own this lens. It is actually my oldest lens, I bought it around 1980. I love it on film and also on my Canon 5D.

Here is a link of some images I have shot with it:

Thanks,

I can't wait to try it out. I am still amazed by the miniature size of these Zuiko wides. How the heck did that that pull off when everyone else seems to be going larger?

The Zuiko 24mm f/2.8 is my second oldest lens and I am not sure if it is multicoated or not.
It is also my smallesss lens. Small but terrible. Which means it is gorgeuosu, amazing, fantastic. I have done some beautiful images with it. Some were done on film and later on with my EOS 5D

This one is a sun rise in marinduque Island, Philippines.

It's pretty certain that your 24/2.8 is the most recent MC version that doesn't actually say "MC" on the lens. You can verify this by the sequence of words in the lens name text (see below). Here's the list of Oly 24/2.8 serial numbers that I compiled a few years ago; last updated on 2007-06-03.

So that means mine is multi coated.
It does not say MC, but has the number 149433.

Doesn't say MC, but according to jcolwell's list it should read H.ZUIKO, have a black front, and should be single coated.

The SN# 203442 from dereksurfs is multicoated.

Hmm looks like mine IS single coated then. Black-nose H.Zuiko. Nice and cheap at ~$80 though
cant wait for it to arrive!

Can anybody comment as to the real-world differences between the single and multi-coated versions?

Cheers

There was a previous thread that had some comments about the differences.

I have noticed that this multi-coated version handles flare really well. I have shot into the sun on a number of occasions so far and had very few problems.

This is really an amazing little lens and very sharp! It definately fills in a WA void and is a great suppliment to the 17-40L on my 5D II when I need better performance under f8. And for $100 I can't imagine a better deal out there.

Jim,

My black-nose 24 f2.8 has the following wording:

OLYMPUS OM-SYSTEM H-ZUIKO AUTO-W 1:2.8 f=24mm ######

However, the serial number on my copy is 135138, which is a tad lower than what you're saying is the serial # range for this version.

David,

Thanks for the info. The S/N ranges in my list are based on lenses that I actually saw (usually in eBay listing photos), and so it makes good sense that there many lenses outside of both the upper and lower bounds of my ranges. I just modifed my list so that your lens now defines the lower limit for that version. You'll see it next time I post it somewhere, including a brief credit to you.

Jim

Here is my extension on jcolwell's list:

H.Zuiko (chrome nose) (all OM-System; no M-System lens known)
OLYMPUS OM-SYSTEM H.ZUIKO AUTO-W 1:2.8 f=24mm nnnnnn
100102 oldest
130746 newest

H.Zuiko (black nose)
OLYMPUS OM-SYSTEM H.ZUIKO AUTO-W 1:2.8 f=24mm nnnnnn
131331 oldest
180308 newest

Zuiko MC (black nose, multicoated)
OLYMPUS OM-SYSTEM ZUIKO MC AUTO-W 1:2.8 f=24mm nnnnnn
180544 oldest <>
195328 newest

but also the 100080 to 101920 contains Zuiko MC lenses; probably originally a renumbering from 100000 was planned when the MC lens was introduced

Zuiko (black nose, multicoated, but not marked with MC)
OLYMPUS OM-SYSTEM ZUIKO AUTO-W 24mm 1:2.8 nnnnnn Japan
195869 oldest
22515x newest

I don't think that there is any overlap between the ZUIKO MC and ZUIKO only numbering range as claimed in jcolwell's list.
