I've got a first generation 580EX flash (no PC sync port) that I would like to fire remotely. Anyone have an adapter that they would recommend? There are a bunch out there and some look pretty cheesy.

Thanks in advance.

Don't waste $ with adapters - they are cheesy - you bought PWs for reliability - right - get your flash modded so you can hook the PW up to it properly. Had 2 of mine done this way.

Get it done right. http://michaelbass.blogspot.com/

Flashzebra has the adapters and also (like Michael) a spare foot assembly with a 3.5mm plug - easy to change out.

Or buy the new Pocketwizard FlexTT5 Canon and mount your flash directly on the Pocketwizard (and retain TTL).

If you're feeling handy, you can mod your 580ex yourself. I did it and I'm not especially mechanically inclined, yet it was easy nonetheless.

I have 2 of the flashzebra mods (was going to do it myself, but decided to just do it the other way) and I use them with the AlienBee remotes and am very pleased with both the mod and the remotes.

If anybody is wondering about dealing with Michael Bass, I want to share my experience. I sent him an email on the 21st at 9:00pm EST (same time zone Michael is in). My email asked a couple of questions and described what I wanted to accomplish. Within 1 1/2 hours I had a clear, detailed, and friendly reply listing all of my options, the pricing, and the advantages of each. I was very happy with the quickness and completeness of his reply.

I took a day or two to think about it and yesterday at 9:45pm I decided to buy from him so I sent him a Paypal and then a separate email telling him what I wanted to buy and advising that payment had been sent by Paypal. Again within an hour and a half I had a reply telling me that my product was finished, tested, and packaged and would be out the door under tracer number 9999999999999 first thing in the morning.

The product should arrive tomorrow.

I am very confident that the product will be of high enough quality that I will want to do business with Michael Bass again, but I wanted to share the unbelievable level of customer service I received. All things said and done, I can't rate this vendor high enough. I wish more companies operated this efficiently and politely.

Here is the link again if anyone needs it:
