Replaced the sony mount plate with a modified fotodiox non-pro Nikon-Eos adapter which I drilled holes in to work with sony mount holes. It was a pain trying to counter-sink the holes on such a thin adapter flange. I didn't do any surgery on the lens and I am only using cardboard pieces to wedge the aperture lever fully open.
I am waiting to hear back from SKGrimes on if they can convert it and how they would control the aperture lever. Mark (16-9) is going to look into coming up with a solution with aperture control as soon as he finishes looking into the Nikon 24 PC-E adapter. See my other thread for pictures of the lens mount. I have infinity focus, just missing an eloquent aperture control.
I don't have a 135L to do any comparison shots, but I think this lens will be sharper than the 135L wide open and will be shaper across the full frame. Also looking at Photozone tests it should vignette less wide open than the 135L. Comparing it to my 85L 1.2 mk2, it seems to be sharper at f1.8 and is sharper in the corners.
I need to do more tests and I know that most people would go with the 135L which is a great lens with AF. But I wanted a 135mm which I thought was the sharpest wide open and had very nice bokeh and also has the Zeiss drawing style which I like better than the Canon. For this lens to become popular with Canon adoptees it will have to have the aperture control combined with a special sony-canon mount adapter which replaces the sony mount. I just wanted to get a head start in trying this lens out and let people here know how it performs.
BTW, the focus ring has a slight ~1mm play it it which still works ok for me as the internal helicoid sp? action is smooth like a Zeiss lens and has enough throw distance to work well. Its like Sony screwed up in designing the connection of the internal focus helicoid with the aperture ring itself causing this slight amount of play before the focusing engages. It would be nice to take this lens apart and see if that play could be fixed.
