Yes it can be for various reasons
1. Lens needs calibration.
2. There is a problem with one of the lens elements.
3. The AF system is not working right or it can't lock into focus.
4. The lens may actually focus closer than indicated, my Sigma Circular fisheye if I put in manual mode can focus closer than the 4 inches they indicate. I have shot as close as 2 inches. But the aperture setting can also come into play here. And of course this is opposite to your issue.
5. Temperature can have an effect on a lens, you may notice some lens can focus past infinity. Expansion and contraction of the elements or lens barrel. ...Show more →
Thank you for the detailed reply! It sounds like it would be worth it to send it in then. I had no idea that a lens could both focus accurately and have a MFD "error". With a shorter MFD I'm sure I'll enjoy the lens a lot more.
Somehow, I don`t own a lens that is collecting dust.
My zoom-combo (16-35/24-70/70-200) is always in my bag for sports, if needed also the 300.
For documentary I like to travel light, so it mostly contains either the 16-35 or the 24-70 plus a 50/1.4 (the Sigma one - I love it).
Tamron 28-75mm........ Since I got the Sigma 30mm 1.4 it`s pretty much all I use (probably 90% of my shots) I don`t really want to go down the All Prime route but it is getting more and more tempting
wow. The 50mm's are really surprising to me. My nifty-fifty is probably my most used lens. It's light and sharp as all get out. I find that the focal length (especially in full frame or on film) makes me think a little more and be more deliberate with my composition.
My least used is my Zenitar fish. Beautiful lens, but I just never seem to 'need' it.
I think, 50mm are that unpopular because most people use crop bodys.
In my opinion the 50mm is not as nice on a crop body as it is on FF.
On a 5D for example, it is one of my favorite lenses.
I'm amazed at all the long primes (including the 135L) going unused in this thread. If any of you really want to let go of your 300 f/4 IS let me know.
For me it's the 10-22. I bought it for those "just in case" scenarios but it just doesn't fit my everyday interests.

Interesting, for me it was the other way around, I used to love it on crop and left it untouched on full frame, preferring either 35 or 85mm.
However I have recently forced myself to use the 50/1.4 again on FF and I found new joy in using it.
Since I got my 300 f2.8, I rarely use my other lenses. I'm always looking for excuses to use the 300... but prior to getting it, the least used lens was the 10-22...
I guess every lens I have except my 500mm f4, at this point. Almost all I do right now is wildlife/bird photography, to the point where I got rid of all my other expensive glass other than my 100-400 because I hardly ever used it and replaced it with a couple cheap Tamron zooms.
