super tele lens to me are a special use item and no one lens fits all uses. It just happens some of us shoot hand held, need the 400mm to 560mm range and IS. The 400/F4 fits that niche very nicely.
Here you can see some of the better shots at this air show were made with the 1.4 TC attached.

Adorama has a D (Demo) condition lens listed at $4,249.
KEH have carried an EX condition one for ages now....$4,299.
I think that one reason that a used 400mm DO resales for comparatively less is due to its checkered reviews.
I just rented one for a trip into the Amazon. Great portability for getting in an out of canoes, climbing up slippy embankments, walking hunched over etc...but in the IQ department a 500mm f4IS it is not.
I totally agree about it being polarizing. I would also say that most of the knocking comes from people who have never actually used it, but are only regurgitating what others have said, and/or never could afford one in the first place. This whole "it's too expensive so I need to find reasons against it" is way too prevalent - includes 1D series and goes beyond photography.

Incidentally, just noticed Adorama also have a 400DO refurbished by Canon. The price is $4,300, i.e., currently $900 below the new retail price. That in fact may be the best deal yet if one is interested in buying the lens.
If they were selling refurbished 500 f/4's for $900 lower than the new retail, those lenses would move faster than what it would take to type in a cc number.
