Hi Tim,
You have very good skills.
You have always produced nice portraits, even if the light was not your favorite.
This set of images is not noticeably "worse" on any level.
But, to "improve" often takes "change." And, in the spirit of offering a suggestion or two in a truely friendly "tone of voice" I offer the following observations and suggestions. Remember as you read them, I am "speaking" as if to a close friend.
AND...I always say: "Follow your own muse."
So...if you are thinking: "This IS MY style, Exactly MY style" ...then just take my suggestions/observations as something from a different POV. We don't have to all eat the same, dress the same, or think the same.
My Simple Suggestions:
1. Suggest a different top for the mother/woman. The light green garment looks "wrinkled" in several images and the bright color grabs attention.
2. The sweater on the man is not as bad (due to color) but also shows wrinkles more than I would like to see.
3. The #2 image has the boy's shirt looking like a diaper. I see it was "not tucked in" (like his dad's style) but in this image it has an "illusion" that is not so good. The white shape in all of the dark top/bottom garment grabs attention. There is not much to see of his expression or eyes in this image. So, the shape becomes more of a distraction.
4. Image #6 is my favorite because of the natural expression on the father. Too bad the kid is not looking in his direction.
5. Many of the photos show the people looking at a "photographer" (camera/viewer) in "typical snapshot style." I don't see any where the people are looking at each other, even in "close" groups or poses. My Suggestion: get them to interact with each other, not with the photographer.
As always, I hope these comments and suggestions help you (and others). ...Show more →
Steady, I really appreciate your thoughtful comments and totally agree! I actually have a number of interacting shots, but the boy was very active (but then again, what little boy isn't?) and in many of those shots, his expressions were not the best, and he was often squirming out of his parents' arms. The dog was great. We really wanted some interacting shots with the boy and the dog, but the boy wasn't too interested. In addition, I wasn't thrilled with some of the "technical" aspects of the interacting shots, so I didn't initially post them. Nevertheless, I'm going to go back and look at the images again and try to post a few more later. I also noticed the wrinkles as well! I think I'll try to remove some for any shots they select for prints.
