This was a very challenging session mainly because the skies were dark and cloudy. It wasn't a nice "crisp" sky but rather a hazy, dull sky. I really had to work on trying to get the light just right...I'm not sure how well I did. Okay, enough excuses! Despite the weather, this was a fun family to work with, and the dog did a great job! C&C welcome as always!

Hi Tim,

You have very good skills.

You have always produced nice portraits, even if the light was not your favorite.

This set of images is not noticeably "worse" on any level.

But, to "improve" often takes "change." And, in the spirit of offering a suggestion or two in a truely friendly "tone of voice" I offer the following observations and suggestions. Remember as you read them, I am "speaking" as if to a close friend.

AND...I always say: "Follow your own muse."

So...if you are thinking: "This IS MY style, Exactly MY style" ...then just take my suggestions/observations as something from a different POV. We don't have to all eat the same, dress the same, or think the same.

My Simple Suggestions:

1. Suggest a different top for the mother/woman. The light green garment looks "wrinkled" in several images and the bright color grabs attention.

2. The sweater on the man is not as bad (due to color) but also shows wrinkles more than I would like to see.

3. The #2 image has the boy's shirt looking like a diaper. I see it was "not tucked in" (like his dad's style) but in this image it has an "illusion" that is not so good. The white shape in all of the dark top/bottom garment grabs attention. There is not much to see of his expression or eyes in this image. So, the shape becomes more of a distraction.

4. Image #6 is my favorite because of the natural expression on the father. Too bad the kid is not looking in his direction.

5. Many of the photos show the people looking at a "photographer" (camera/viewer) in "typical snapshot style." I don't see any where the people are looking at each other, even in "close" groups or poses. My Suggestion: get them to interact with each other, not with the photographer.

As always, I hope these comments and suggestions help you (and others).

Steady, I really appreciate your thoughtful comments and totally agree! I actually have a number of interacting shots, but the boy was very active (but then again, what little boy isn't?) and in many of those shots, his expressions were not the best, and he was often squirming out of his parents' arms. The dog was great. We really wanted some interacting shots with the boy and the dog, but the boy wasn't too interested. In addition, I wasn't thrilled with some of the "technical" aspects of the interacting shots, so I didn't initially post them. Nevertheless, I'm going to go back and look at the images again and try to post a few more later. I also noticed the wrinkles as well! I think I'll try to remove some for any shots they select for prints.

#6 is fantastic.

I love the minimalist feel to your post. Crisp, airy, and fresh. Good job. I'm sure they will be happy!

Although I don't like the distant feel of longer glass - I think you pulled it off nicely while retaining some intimacy.

Some great shots here (I like 1, 7, and 10 the best) and some excellent comments by Steady. Which leads me to a question. The OP notes that he will try to remove some of the wrinkles in post. Is this easy to do while still retaining the texture of the sweater? I cannot recall having done this myself so I am curious as to how hard it is to do.

Granted, if the client wore something different, then the garmet would be less prone to wrinkling. But often one can have clients show up for a location shoot with an outfit that is a bit different than what the photographer envisioned and with no time to go back and change.

So I am curious how well they turn out for timhpark after removal in post and curious as to how steady would handle the situation.
Thanks!

Hi,
I will answer a question here as it seems addressed to me (Tim, I am not trying to hijack your thread here, but this may help others).

Good questions.

My Approach is "Simple."

1. Tell the adults what to wear (give them basic suggestions) or what looks better or what looks worse (vibrant green in winter seems "out of season" for example).

2. Tell them to bring two or three "additional cover-ups" or "top garments."

So, if you see them wearing something you KNOW will clash or will cause the image to look less than optimal, just ask them to change into their own "alternate" clothing item or cover up the offending garment.

It only takes a minute to do this and my clients always find this to be "helpful" as they want to look their best at all times.

This leads to the next obvious good question: "What to do when a woman client brings four garment bags full of clothing to "try" in photos?"

That...it a question of a different issue and I will leave that to someone else to answer (in fun or seriously).

And.. the last scenario (4 garment bags full) has actually happened to me.

Thank you very much! If I have some time, I might try to post some reworked sweater shots.

Hey Steady, feel free to answer any questions!!! I was a bit surprised by the brightness of the green. I'm very specific about my clothing recommendations to my clients. When they described their clothes to me on the phone, I was picturing more of an "earthy" green. btw, in some cases, clients have emailed me pictures of their clothing options for my feedback.

You might want to try a "selective color replacement" on that green.

Very nice work. From where I'm sitting those dark and cloudy skies were very good to you. The only nit I can find is maybe the blur in number 8 is a bit strong. Almost distracting. But everything else, you just nailed.

Scott

Hi Tim,

That second set of images (Interaction)....is GREAT!

(My exception is #15 which seems more like the first set, more typical posed)
____________________________

THAT (interaction) is what I would buy....from you too!

And I think #13 is VERY cute and expressive.

11 and 16 are also high on my list.

These give a very different (better) feeling of "family" and "love" and spending time with the young boy.

I hope these comments ENCOURAGE you to keep up the good work.

Good stuff, skin tones look a little hot on my crappy notebook monitor, so watch the brightness, but I love the colors and comps.

Excellent shots, Tim. I'm a big fan of your work and really enjoyed the added images especially. Very sharp and good use of DOF.

Tim...great stuff.

I am a big fan of #16 followed by #14...you have the makings of a great father/son series here. #2 is also very cool.

Overall I think it is a great series...with a good variety of "look at the camera" standard portraits and "no-look" lifestyle pictures.

And...as always...lighting is top notch. Did you use your shoot-through for a little "boost"?

Thanks for sharing.
